Wonderful bowling by Bhuvi and Shami. India favorites to win this if this last another 5 overs.

agree with simon doull in that india just need to find an third seam bowler and they have a team to challenge or compete very highly overseas in NZ, Aus, Eng and SA.
bhuvi and shami are world class and can match any seam bowler from those countries, not often who can say that in the past 20 years barring Srinath and Zaheer khan, so to have 2 of them is a good sign.
quite common lately for players to state bhuvi is the most skillful bowlers who can move the ball both ways and seam it as well, pretty much taken over from Anderson in that regard.
At the moments india just lacks a reliable 3rd option it is either wayward Yadav that struggles to use the new ball and is more effective and deadly in low slow pitches or with the old ball.
Ishant Sharma is probably india best option since he does have a stock ball and really the 3rd bowler just needs to bowl overs so Bhuvi and Shami don't bowl 25 overs a day etc.
Not really sure it is wise for Bumrah to play as a third option considering he not played a test yet and it needs to be seen if he can bowl the overs ishant sharma can.

Sadly for india at the moment they don't seem to have any depth in Test cricket outside Bhuvi and Shami.
Yadav is a bit one dimensional and ishant is ok/average bowler.
any injures to shami and Bhuvi then india struggling big time and need to hope the likes of Bumrah and the fast bowlers coming through are ready for Test cricket.

Fair play to India, nearly pulled of an amazing victory here.

Why were the quicks so succesful suddenly in India? Is it the time of year for them to be more effective? Or was a pitch prepared to counter Herath and co and play to Indias strengths?

relaid pitch, weather and ganguly wanting green deck/ help for fast men in kolkata.
been like that for like 2 yrs now in Kolkata.
KKR picked woakes, boult and De grandhomme because of the fact Eden garden helps fast bowlers.

nothing really to do with herath or team strength plus with them going SA in couple month time it was encouraged that kolkata should be kept as it is and not cut off the grass before the test so that is why it was a wet green top on day 1.

should be back to normal on 2nd test and 3rd test makes no sense though for india to rest pandya for the first 2 test when they knew the 1st one was a green top, could have rested him for the final 2.
although pandya was the one asking for the rest so maybe the management had no choice but to rest him for the game.
