Cook because he failed all times in this series so far
Don't really expect cook to get a score at all in the series so no point mentioning him.

I wish I could argue this point, but I have a sneaking suspicion that you're right, even if you're a bit blunt about it. This might be one tour too far.

Yeah a very crucial series for Cook though.
this series pretty much will decide cook future in the game, a poor series here will probably mean he will call it a day soon and if he does well he would probably carry on for another 3-4 yrs.

Doubt it. Australia will want to turn the screw. They know as well as we do that if Australia win in Adelaide, it's series over, and the only question remaining is whitewash or not.

Would generally expect once they were "in" they'd have started to find things easier ; and at least some would have gone on with it. Though of course only Smith went on with it for Australia (not counting the second Aus innings where the fizz was gone from the game after a dozen or so overs)

Do think that England bats these days generally aren't as geared to batting endlessly onwards , even on placid wickets , as their counterparts from Australia or India , for example. Even when a Root or a Stokes , say , gets a big hundred they usually get it pretty fast. So when they have to grind out the runs time gets them making a mistake - sometimes with minimal actual impact from the bowler (Vince run out , Malan careless hook ) I guess I'm suggesting it is primarily a failure of concentration rather than skill.

Which may give a glimmer of hope : if some of the other wickets are a bit livelier , although there may be a few cheap dismissals , that will probably apply to both sides : and the advantage that a Smith marathon confers over a Root frisky fifty might not weigh in...

Alternatively Cook might settle in - when he does get going he is one player we know doesn't get tired of batting ! Not sure what he was thinking of second innings...

One can hope that this match provided the serious match practice that was missing from the flimsy warm ups and they are all better for the experience. Otherwise it is going to be a rough tour.

Nailed it alfie.

We've come a long way from the days when all the bastmen could and often did get big scores if they got in - Strauss, KP, Trott, Colly, Vaughan even Bell - all tended to get 130+ when they got in. Cook used to, but his conversion rate in the last couple of years has dropped off a very long way. He still gets 50s, but often doesn't go on, whereas before he used to make big hundreds for fun. It's no coincidence that England won a lot more and were far more consistent when that was our batting line up.

Apparently Smith scored 17 runs in one session and 30 in the next. England couldn't do that. They just don't have the discipline required to do it

He showed great self control - and even maturity - for someone who is a naturally attacking player.

A very important innings in his career.

It was pretty easy for him. The new ball did something for five overs, then the pitch was docile.

Both teams batted poorly on that surface, save for Smith. Felt the small target in the 2nd innings had England give up, so the openers had an easy ride.

Both teams should really be going Adelaide with an innings of 500 under their belt, and having shaken hands on a draw.

I wonder how much of England's current problems with the batting are based on the huge focus on ODI cricket in recent times.

Also sounds very English to blame effort or what have you. Football World Cup style.

Truth is, we went to OZ with a batting line up with hardly any worthwhile experience, and almost zero proven test match quality.

Its only natural we scored 200 runs short of par. The bowlers nearly brought us back into it first up, but that pitch was pretty dead, and once Cummins showed he was winning to block and Smith didnt throw it away, that was all it needed.

So which is it , Sussex ?

Should England (and Australia) have made 500 in a drawn Test or was the actual 300/200 their (almost zero...quality) par score ? You really can't have it both ways...

If Jake Ball bowls such friendly stuff again, Smith would get a double. From Day 1, I have been saying Liam Plunkett is a must for AUS conditions. His style of bowling is suited for those tracks. I don't care how many games he has played in the CC.

Of course England's batsmen can't convert starts into substantial scores.

The problem with Ball is they seem to have manufactured a bowler. He doesn't come across as a natural athlete. Needs to work on his game. Chris Woakes wasn't good either. But D/N Test should suit him.

Agreed - really don't understand why the selectors seem to ignore Plunkett. As soon as Wood was out I would have had Plunkett on the plane
