Squad been announced no real surprises.
Bumrah get his first call up.
Rahane vice captain.
Parthiv Patel reserve keeper.

Seems like KL Rahul won’t play the first test which is a shocking decision.

Test squad.
Virat Kohli (capt), M Vijay, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-capt), Rohit Sharma, Wriddhiman Saha (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Parthiv Patel, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah.

Shanky any particular reason why you think Kuldeep Yadav is india best spinner and should be in the plane to SA.

Squad as expected, not many surprises here. Jasprit Bumrah replaces Vijay Shankar from what i had posted. Won't mind as it is a good selection. With Shami showing affected by niggle in one test, we needed specialist pace bowler as backup to cover injury or bad form. Well done selectors.

yeah plus a third spinner is not needed in South africa and the 17 man was between Kuldeep Yadav and the last pace bowling option.
no idea why Shanky thinks Kuldeep Yadav is better than Jadeja and Ashwin.

Good to see Bumrah has a test call up, hope he makes his debut, good bowler, no reason why he shouldn't do well in test cricket

Bit annoyed about the T20 squad against sri lanka it seems like the first 11 of the first test for SA won't play and that means KL Rahul not in the team, although that does mean Hardik pandya not in the team but not really sure what is happening with him at the moment, missed the Test series for a rest but back in the limited overs series that to in the T20 series where india picking a very different team/Squad.

From the T20 squad only Rohit Sharma, KL rahul pandya plus bumrah is in the test squad.
but only Pandya and Rahul got a good chance of playing in the first test, unless the managment already decided they playing 6 batsman and 4 bowlers with Bhuvi batting at 9.
Suspect they will do that would mean they don't have to drop Rahane and Rohit still plays.
Hopefully KL Rahul plays one kohli favourite will get dropped.
Crazy two weeks ago Kl rahul was certain to be picked for the series with Vijay in the borderline spot and now Vijay certain with KL rahul in the borderline spot although this wouldn't happen if Shastri and kohli are desperate for Dhawan to be picked in the team.

Carrying 3rd spinner to SA will be a blunder and if they had done so it would been equal to blunder of England playing only one spinner in tests in India. In SA tests, only one spinner should be playing 11 imo. 2nd spinner should be on bench and is enough to cover injury to one spinner. 3rd spinner would be waste of space. It is good that our selectors are respecting the conditions. Finally the first and basic resourcing part is properly done this time. The right cricketers are in the squad. KL Rahul is the makeshift wicket-keeper backup. Hardik has to stay injury free, else our team balance will be terribly bad.

TBH I don't expect Hardik to play in the series unless they feel 4 seam options are needed and the batsman are doing their jobs and are happy to risk one less batsman.
Really hardik spot is between Rohit sharma and Hardik pandya.
This looks like the team at the moment.
Vijay
Dhawan (hopefully KL Rahul)
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Rohit Sharma
Saha
Ashwin
Bhuvi
Shami
Ishant

Very strong team on paper, the only weak link is Dhawan.

They got parthiv patel has a reserve keeper/batsman.

Pappu in the squad. Didn't notice at all. So we have a proper keeper backup too rather than depend on makeshift Rahul in case of injury to Saha. Selection looks much superb to me now.

the only issue I got with the squad is no back up middle order batsman, india rich enough to afford 18 players although it is really minor considering they probably don't need the spot considering it is very unlikely that player will play and KL rahul/third opener could take that spot but I hope in England or Australia they take the extra player especially england where visa are a pain to get.

Although good news is that india have an A tours series lined up with the lions at the same time as the indian series, might be the end of me complaining about the lions setup, can't believe ECB agreed to that, should mean Lions should be coming to india soon probably closer to the time England next tour Asia or india.

Can't argue with the squad, lolks spot on.

No way should Dhawan open in SA ahead of Vijay or Rahul

Yeah the squad looks good, although to be frank 15 players of the squad picks it's self.
only the last fast bowlers spot and the reserve keeper was in discussion.
wasn't really a hard squad to pick.
big year for india though, since this is probably india best squad they sending to overseas tours for a long time.
not many weak links barring Dhawan.

Just hope the pace attack stays fit if they all survive the next 12-16 months think india could do something special overseas, because if the batsman score runs then they got the bowlers to win games overseas now.
the england series looks to be a belter because it would be a battle between Anderson and his successor Bhuvi.

Selectors have done a very fine job. There are no complaints at all. This selection panel seems good. The Roger Binny selection panel had made blunders. I think if Shikhar gets another 50 in the warm-up to carry on his good form here and Rahul flops in that warm-up then there are chances form will be considered over technique and Shikhar will move ahead of Rahul as opening partner for Vijay. Technically Rahul is better without any doubt and he has an hundred in Australia. I don't remember the last time when Sikhar scored a ton in SA or OZ or England in tests.

For me, Pandya should be at 6 over Rohit...that allows India to play 5 bowlers, which they will need...if you include Pandya, that means you have 4 seamers + 1 spinner....which is what will be needed....Vijay, Dhawan, etc can bowl some overs if need be then too
