The Ashes: Adelaide.

Postby Arthur Crabtree » Tue Nov 28, 2017 2:30 pm

2-6 December, 03.30 GMT.

At least England move on to a ground where they have some history of success (as well as a memorable failure). They have won nine times at the Oval, and lost... 17.

Like at Brisbane, they won with Bodyline, with Tyson and during the Packer affair. These are their most recent wins apart from a victory inspired by a slog from Defreitas in the nineties, and the brilliant innings win in 2010-11. The rest were in the game's formative years.

This is England's second D/N match. In the other at EDgbaston, Root got a ton and Cook made a double. And England won by an innings. Australia have won all three of their DN matches, two in Adelaide.

This is the first DN Test for Vince, Woakes, Ball and anyone who might replace them. For the Aussies, Cummins, Bancroft, Paine debut under lights. Australia's 3-5 all have tons. Hazlewood has 18 wickets and Starc 16, both in all three matches.
I always say that everybody's right.

As loath selectors are to change a winning team, there is no guarantee that the Aus bowling line up will be the same.

I am sure that they are also continually looking out for a likely alrounder, as well.

I'll stick my neck out and say the Aussies will keep the same XI.

England might move Overton out and Ball in.

Interesting news about Stokes. One assumes that if he's left the country, the police have given him permission, which strongly implies he won't be charged with anything.

Personally I don't think they hype about the D/N factor is particularly warranted.

Adelaide is the place that Australia might want an extra bowler. After Maxwells 200 might we see him back in the team, also to help with a few overs?

The other Marsh brother has also just started bowling again, took a couple of wickets. And made a 100. Looks like it was a good batting pitch though. Could Khawajas place be in trouble?

Hmm, the selectors seem to have a thing about Sayers though, and he is always in the mix, and talked up when the Adelaide test comes around, especially when it is a day night affair..

Stokes' case has been referred to the Crown Prosecution Service - apparently the police have finished their investigation, and it's up to the CPS to determine if they should go ahead with a charge. Reports are that it could take several weeks for a decision to be made.

I still don't understand the snail's pace of the investigation, but I'm no lawyer, so I assume they have their reasons. Not sure what can be read into it (other than that it's presumably not an open-and-shut case either way). The implication is however that Stokes' already small chances of participating in the Ashes are becoming non-existent.

If (when) England do go on to lose, you do have to wonder. Stokes, TRJ, Wood all out, whereas Australia somehow have their first choice bowling line up fit for the first time in, well, 4 years (since the last Ashes). With Pattinson and NCN out of the Aussie reserve stocks, and Bird decent but not in the same class, you do wonder if Australia had to cope with this many bowling injuries how competitive they'd be. Still, if ifs and buts...

There is talk that Stokes has missed 2 ODIs and 2 Tests and that would be his penalty. Never mind he was injured for those ODIs.
I thought the ban would be from the time the police drop the charges, if they do.

If Stokes has got a NOC certificate from the ECB then why hasn't Hales? He would have been off to play in some T20 somewhere.

Pretty sure the pace is simply down to the police (and now the CPS) having cases other than Stokes' to deal with, some probably for far more serious crime. If he is charged it will probably be an even longer wait for a court date. Not good for cricket, but he can't expect special treatment.
