I remember Ishant was handy on that tour.

Low scoring game too. Not like the Indian bats won it.

Was that the tour that Ishant was quick and reversed it? Seem to remember he really troubled Ponting

Ponting had an ordinary series and that's the way i remember it, but the record says Ishant averaged 60 in the series but Pathan under 30!

But it must be that series because he averaged 90 on his other tour in 2012...

I think it was the fact he only bowled well to Ponting, but IIRC he reversed it away and got him driving in one test with a bit of pace, and everyone got very excited about the potential of Ishant. Chappie was a big fan of Pathan too, it was thought both of them were threshold players for Indian seamers, but neither ended up being test quality in the end.

Thanks guys.

I remember Ishant's potential being much lauded on that tour, especially at Perth, but it must have been the way he got Ponting in both innings. The record says he took 2-34 and 1-63 in that game.

It wasnt only the wicket by memory. There was one point in the match where he bowled a spell to Ponting, and the great man couldnt get a bat on it. A few balls that reversed huge amounts, at pace, with bounce. Ponting didnt know what to do, and snicked off to another huge outswinger, if memory serves, and everyone in the commentary box thought they had just witnessed the coming of age of the next best thing.

Id have to guess this was at a time where Ponting had gone through 3-4 years of almost untouchable good form too, so that added weight to the performance.

Not sure we seen any of it until that Lords test when Ishant bowled well, in between there is a lot of filth

TBH that spell to Ponting probably was a defining moment in his career, suspect if he didn’t trouble Ponting but a lesser batsman he wouldn’t have gotten the hype and he might have been able to develop outside the test arena.
Feel like ishant only recently improved while he wasn’t guaranteed an India team spot.

If anything ishant will alway be known for that Ponting spell, being *modded* and being unlucky.

Id agree, I think that spell bought him most of his career caps. The Indians had seen his potential, and refused to give up on him despite the fact he mainly served up pies for most of his career.

TBH that is generally been the problem for ishant that he tends to bowl lots of good spells without taking a wicket.
Only really been in 2014 where he started taking wickets in decent size got a good haul in nz and then he earnt my respect and England but then after that he rightly been dropped from the team because he no longer in the top 3 pacers at home conditions and since then he been in the wickets in ranji cricket and gone ahead of Umesh Yadav recently.

Mike Hussey's century innings in 2010 is a good example of this. He was leaving balls that would be considered suicidal on other pitches, but I remember him saying in the post match interview that at Perth he would always leave balls on length only, and not the line. While others would be playing at fuller balls on the stumps, he had the experience to know the bounce carried a lot of relatively full balls over the stumps.

If England are to learn anything from India victory is that full bowling wins games at Perth and that middle pacer swing bower won the game for India.
But then again that plan didn’t work with vinay kumar getting destroyed in 2011 or 2014 can’t remember the year probably 2011.
Although agree with greyblazer it was insanity to pick him for Perth which basically destroyed his career considering he could be useful in certain tracks in England and sa.

Was a strong Aussie team as well so no easy wickets for india, probably an exception than the norm though since normally pace wins games at Perth and not medium pace swing bowlers.
