Wood has done ok in limited overs for England, but has a reputation for losing pace at each spell, so in Tests that's a liability, and his fc record isn't auspicious (particularly recently). Maybe with four pacers that can be managed. I suspect his future is in white ball... but then he is in the Lions squad shadowing the Ashes. There's a certain amount of hype that comes with Wood at international level that might be justified, but its hard to say is definitely appropriate. And maybe he'd have been better in Perth. But... he's the obvious pick out the Lions and I don't think England will be boosted by recalling Ball.

Anyone touting Mark Wood might not remember his last few efforts in Test cricket, where he looked like a 40 year old Journeyman medium pacer.

He wasnt exactly living up to the quick and nasty tag he got before the injuries, let alone what I have seen of him after. England really should have thought about Plunkett for this series, assuming he still can crank it up

Wood looks finished by those injuries. He certainly isnt going to be an express pace option

Where is Plunkett, and why was he not chosen for the tour?

He was injured, then typically of modern England, was pulled out a load of possible championship games to rest for the odi. They then didn't consider him having played enough.

I guess Martin Samuel has never heard of Glenn McGrath. Or Brett Lee, who averaged 40 in ashes tests.

Said it before and I'll say it again....these are a group of English players raised on white ball cricket coached by a coach whose home us in white ball crucket who were playing shots like they were playing white ball cricket.

Sorry, but blaming limited overs input doesn't explain it, does it? How many if these Aussie's are the same

The simple fact is, we are producing anything that is good enough to make the setup.

Agree. It's in attitude rather than ability. Australia seem to have the capacity to switch between the two formats better.

It seems as though England have been pretty unlucky with injuries to their bowling line-up. Wood & TRJ out, Moeen's been bowling injured, Broad apparently has a niggle (explaining his lack of incisiveness), Overton was bowling injured for the second half of this game and will be out for Melbourne. Picking injured players is not good policy, but is it any wonder that England can't take 20 wickets if their bowlers aren't fit? Anderson's about the only one who's not injured, and guess what, he's done ok. You can't bowl sides out on these sort of wickets on your own. Add Stokes' self-inflicted absence, and it's no wonder we're struggling.

Meanwhile, Australia's normally fragile attack has come through 3 consecutive games unscathed, and will probably manage all 5. Doesn't seem fair somehow.

I'd put Crane in rather than Curran in Melbourne, just for something different. We're on about our fifth choice fourth seamer, so what, ninth best fast bowler in the country? If the best three or four can't get the Aussies out, how will adding an also-ran make any difference? England's attack is already one-dimensional, and our spinner can't buy a wicket. Why not try it? He can't do much worse than the other bowlers have done, and the variation might just add an edge that has been lacking.

But to be honest, England have the players and ability to win in Melbourne. They just need their key players to step up and find a way to press home the advantage when they get it.

One wonders how Australia would cover an injury to Smith or Lyon. If one of the quicks got injured i think that would be easier to cover. But if Smith or Lyon went down, then suddenly Australia has no adequate cover.

Steve Smith, the rubbish leggie who bats at 8? I would think one of Glenn Maxwell, Joe Burns (both of whom have doubles this season), Travis Head or even SOB. I guess cover for the Goat would come down to SOK or Ashton Agar. We'd be a tad weaker, but against this current crop of rattled Poms, still come out on top.
