The 'Tests' come too late for England's tour to New Zealand. Whilst the red ball games don't overlap, the senior squad would have been announced well in advance.

The Lions squad will be very similar to the one that has been out in Australia. Except Hameed will come in, with Duckett probably staying at home. They will also hope that some of the currently injured fast bowlers (Helm and Joverton, for example) return. Considering how the seniors' tour has gone, I'm sure England will opt for the fastest options.

Something like... 01 Hameed 02 Gubbins 03 Jenning 04 Livingstone 05 Lawrence 06 Davies 07 Coughton 08 Tongue 09 Helm 10 Leach 11 Garton. With Clarke, Mahmood, Bess in reserve.

Even though England have batted poorly, the batting places have probably tightened, with only Vince now under pressure in the short term. Whereas in the bowling, Mo and three seamer options are under scrutiny.

The other way of looking at that, though, is whatever happens during this series, I would still back the bowlers to perform in New Zealand and then back at home. I'm not sure where I'd back Vince to consistently make runs. Still not sure about the consistency of Malan or Stoneman, whilst Cook is in a right mess.

There's also the question of whom to drop when almost everyone has failed.

Another factor is who the managers are fed up with playing up off the field.

Ben Duckett has been omitted from the England Lions tour of the West Indies next year as the ECB get tough on the off-field antics that has left them defending the professionalism of the Ashes squad.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/ ... ast-chance

Entire tour: K Jennings (Lancashire, capt), J Clarke (Worcestershire), L Livingstone (Lancashire), S Curran (Surrey), J Porter (Essex), P Coughlin (Nottinghamshire), S Mahmood (Lancashire), N Gubbins (Middlesex), A Davies (Lancashire, wk).

Red-ball only: H Hameed (Lancashire), D Lawrence (Essex), B Foakes (Surrey, wk), T Roland-Jones (Middlesex), J Leach (Somerset), M Crane (Hampshire), J Tongue (Worcestershire).

White-ball only: S Northeast (Kent), L Dawson (Hampshire), D Bess (Somerset), T Helm (Middlesex), G Garton (Sussex), M Parkinson (Lancashire).

Shouldn't Northeast be on the whole tour?

One thing that strikes - and puzzles - me in that squad , is that the the potential "fast" options , Garton and Helm , are limited to the white ball stuff...

Exact opposite of M@tt's reasonable assumption . I see Porter (who is , I understand , more of a talented medium pacer ) is in for the whole trip.

Not sure what , if anything , this signifies . But does it surprise anyone else ?

Well I wouldn't say it surprises me!

How quick is Mahmood? He's been accelerated through the system despite a lack of games for Lancs (3 FC games, no LA games, and a few T20s this season).

Maybe would have been worth looking at three spinners on the first class leg of the tour. If Rayner isn't going to get a chance, perhaps add Bess to the full tour. It's worthwhile just seeing who looks the part at that level.

I suspect the three grounds at sabina park greenfield and North sound will disappointingly not assist pace bowlers. I expect spin to dominate in all three "tests ".

I hope I am proven wrong.

Let's see how the Lions players performed in the last county cricket red ball season....

How many of their batsmen averaged over 35?

Livingston (24) 803 runs @ 47.23
Lawrence (20) 761 runs @ 44.76
Clarke (21) 920 runs @ 43.80
Foakes (24) 110 runs @ 42.50
Davies (23) 916 runs @ 39.82
Coughlin (25) 364 runs @ 36.40
Hameed (21) 513 runs @ 28.50
Curran (19) 423 runs @ 26.43
Jennings (25) 490 runs @ 25.78
Gubbins (24) 314 runs @ 24.15

Six of them...not bad. Will our selections reflect a similar balance?

How many of their bowlers averaged under 30?

Porter (24) 75 wkts @ 16.82
Mahmood (20) 12 wkts @ 21.33
Leach (26) 51 wkts @ 25.78
Tongue (20) 47 wkts @ 25.78
Coughlin (25) 27 wkts @ 29.77
Roland-Jones (29) 28 wkts @ 31.42
Crane (20) 16 wkts @ 44.68
Curran (19) 25 wkts @ 47.16

Crane was expensive...what do the selectors see that's so special about him?

There is a distinct lack of batsmen averaging 40+ in general, let alone in the Lions:

From recent Test squads: Cook, Root, Bairstow, Ballance, Foakes, Livingstone (latter two yet to play, Ballance not in latest squad)
From the Lions: Clarke, Lawrence, Duckett (latter not in latest squad)
Former England: Trescothick, Bell, Trott, Carberry, Compton, Bopara
Others: Browne, Burns, Mitchell, Hildreth, S.Davies

I think that's the complete list! And none of them average over 50. Given we have 18 counties there should be more.
