I go to the good time and trouble to select players for the Sheffield Shield FL who are most unlikely to get an Aussie call up, and then they call up Holland!

then to add insult to injury.... injury to Bird, that is, they call up Sayers as well......... with no intentions of playing either of my boys.... that's what smarts... drinks carriers!

Theunis de Bruyn and Zubayr Hamza hit 40s, but there was not much else....

The batting cupboard is looking bare, in contrast to the riches in the pace bowling department.

Cummins 4-32, Hazlewood 3-40.

Olivier only took two wickets. Has Hendricks leap frogged him on the assembly line?

South Africa have picked wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen and allrounder Wiaan Mulder - both uncapped in Tests - in their squad for the first two Tests against Australia.

Allrounders Chris Morris and Andile Phehlukwayo, and fast bowler Duanne Olivier were the players to miss out on selection, after having been part of the squad for the Tests against India.

Squad Faf du Plessis (capt), Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Quinton de Kock, Theunis de Bruyn, AB de Villiers, Dean Elgar, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, Morne Morkel, Wiaan Mulder, Lungisani Ngidi, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada.

Cummins, Hazlewood and Starc v Morkel, Rabada and Phildander? What a mouth watering contest - I feel sorry for the batsmen on both sides.

Let the battle of the quicks commence.

It will be really interesting to see what type of pitches are prepared, especially after the debacles of the India series.

Surprisingly, Aus have not lost a series in SA since the exclusion of the Seffers over Apartheid.

The Seffers have won the past three series in Australia as well.

Aussies will play the side that won in Sydney v England.

Kingsmead used to be the ground in SA that suited the spinners, but it doesn't look like either side will pick two. And in recent years it's tended to help everyone. Though surprisingly, Big Vern averages 37 there.

It's one of the rare situations in modern cricket where the away side actually does well, but that in part has to be due to the fact that the conditions in both countries are similar enough that it's not as 'away' as other tours to e.g. England or the subcontinent. Same hemisphere, similar (ish) climates, and generally hard, bouncy pitches that favour quick bowlers and back-foot players. There are differences of course, but it's still familiar enough that the away team has the weapons to win.
