You could make a case for this being one of the poorest England sides for a long time on form and ability.

Cook, Anderson and Broad are all approaching the end of their careers and no where near their peak periods.

Root is in the worst form of his life.

Stoneman is not test quality, and his top score of 60 in nearly 20 test innings proves that.

Malan has probably had his decent run and will revert to being a good county player at best.

Bairstow isn't in a great run of form.

Buttler is a one day player.

Stokes will take a while to get back to any sort of form after his absence from the game.

Bess is second best Somerset spinner after Leach who isn't good enough to play test cricket.

And Wood flatters to deceive.

Apart from them the rest are world beaters.
