Openers have done one part of job of seeing off the new ball. 14 overs have been bowled. No wickets with new ball. Now it remains to be seen whether they can control the with significant individual scores.

I was just about to say they looked set. Just as well I didn't - Jennings out caught behind for 29.

As recently as 18 months ago with Ali/Stokes/Bairstow at 5/6/7 in Bangladesh.

Ed Smith would also argue it's not the case here, as Buttler has been selected as a batsman only.

Gets out to Faheem, who is not a good bowler for tests.

Can Cook go on to score a significant innings.

Wonder if starting a two match Test series at Lord's might be detrimental.

Seems teams have an extra ounce of oomph by playing at the Home of Cricket that puts England on the back foot.

Great to see Stuart Broad respond to his critics both on and off the field.

Can't understand the calls for Broad to be dropped (certainly after the 1st Pakistan test) when he bowled well in the New Zealand test series.

Shame Cook went before the close, but he does seem to have returned to some sort of form.

England's batting is so awful these days I have little faith in a big first innings lead, but I think we're going to need one.

On that note re: Cook, well done for breaking Border's record for consecutive test appearances. 154 not out. Given he's back in some form, and the difficulties England have had with openers, the streak is set to continue for at least the India series. This is a record that may never be broken.

Sachin's 200 all time appearances looks safe. Cook would have to play on for another four years, which seems unlikely. Although he is still only 32. It is possible. Cook seems likely to finish his career in second place on that count - next highest is Ponting's 168. Cook has 156, so he'll surpass that next summer if he keeps playing.

If they had anything like the torrential rain in Leeds that we had in Nottingham this morning, they won't be starting soon.

Just got in from the garden where it's clear blue skies and early twenties, and thought, I know I'll watch a bit of cricket, see how Dom Bess and Joe Root had got on in the first hour.

Forgot that even though this country is small the difference in weather across it can be significant.
