Good day for England, but not the killer blow we were going for. Quick wickets tomorrow morning and Pakistan are still in this, especially as day 3 may be better for batting (less cloud, pitch may flatten out). But if Buttler can stick around for an hour or two tomorrow morning the lead will probably be insurmountable.

Michael, admit it, you were wrong.

Broad had a poor Ashes, true, but he's still taken 45 wickets at 33 in the last 12 months. Not great by his standards, but far from terrible. But Vaughan seems obsessed with Mark Wood - he was seriously asking 'what has he done to get dropped'?, and using very modest figures of 2-74 at Lord's to justify his continued inclusion. Obviously hasn't noticed the crap figures in just about every other test he's played recently...

Just looked over the highlights reel. Obviously it's not necessarily a fair reflection of a player's ability as you only get to see their best, but my word, Bess looked good. Really sound technique, getting to the pitch of the ball, striking it cleanly with a straight bat. He looked a lot better technically than the specialist batsman Malan did when the pair were together.

At least for the most part England were got out by good deliveries that did something, rather than being complicit in their own downfall, as is usually the case.

That list suggests there's a fine line between nightwatchman and batsman promoted up the order. I'd question Boucher's inclusion in the list as a genuine 'nightwatchman'.

Yes, Boucher was not a tailender.

Kumble scored a ton, so did Sir Aggy. Both at Lords iirc. But not as night watchman

Kumble's ton was at the Oval in 2007, ensuring England didn't come back in the series.

Who in their infinite wisdom made this a two test series?

Is it really more important to play so many ODI matches against Australia and India than to schedule a third test?
