It's games like that that give some confidence that England can win the world cup. Sydney earlier in the year, the Oval and now this. They can win tight games.

Buttler's batting seems to have moved to another level this year. He was always destructive, but he's added a level of situational awareness. The temptation will be to wrap him in cotton wool now - he's going to be pivotal to our world cup chances.

The bowling does remain a bit of a concern, unfortunately.

It might not be the strongest Aussie side, but that's only the second 5-0 whitewash in England's favour in their ODI history - it just doesn't happen that often (and the other time was against Zimbabwe).

Indeed he does seem to have matured as a batsman... as we saw in the Pakistan Tests , perhaps. I was very doubtful about his Test recall but with this new-found steadiness...
Still reckon if he is playing as a specialist bat he should be in the top six , leaving JB1 at seven ; but that's another issue...

Fantastic effort in the this game , anyway. And kudos to Rashid too : did his vital "second" job , without which Jos would have been left high and dry. Easy to forget Rashid's batting prowess since he rarely gets to the crease for England these days :)

Only two batters ever have a SR of over a run a ball.

ABDV's record is just mindblowing.

He was brilliant in IPL as well. Scored 500+ runs and stayed unbeaten carrying team to victory in few of those knocks batting as opener. The maturity of international player was well on display few months back. Here too he stayed not out in the big match winning innings. Was easily the best player of spin from non Asian countries. Almost all Aussie, South African and England batsmen were struggling throughout IPL. Willaimson and Jos were the only two players who performed on adverse wickets and conditions.

He played spin well even in first over when he wasn't set with some nicely played sweeps for 4's. The only ball i saw that troubled him was the straighter one from spinners, to which he stayed on back foot.

He is probably the best finisher in ODI cricket at this point of time.

Agree, it's not even fair on the specialist bat to come in at seven, without the probability of having time to make a score, and without another discipline to make up for that lack of opportunity.

Also protected from the harder ball by the all rounders.

He should have some sort of record in fc cricket too. This selection is no more than a punt.

But if he does make it, he could present a captaining option somewhere down the line!

I think JB2's innings might be up there with Mark Boucher's 147 and Kevin O'Brien's 113 as one of the best ODI innings I've ever seen.

Didn't click that he was on his home ground until I watched the highlights...

Not all that typical of his Terminator style ODI batting, but there was an air of implacability about him. Like there used to be with Michael Bevan.

Rashid was cast as his Andy Bichel.

Great effort from Billy Stanlake. He was pretty firey. Took a nice catch too. Might be a future Test player if he can keep the whole of his physique fit.

Clatter of wickets at NMR with a 5-fer for Benco and two early wickets for Morkel. Lees gets off the mark, but only just. He now averages 6.25 in four games. He's just reached 50, for the whole season.

It's fascinating how bad form gets. This is the record that a weekend player could beat. As with Haseeb.

Though Yorks and Lancs haven't put many runs on the board generally, over the whole season.

Be interesting if he can keep fit, seem to think his bowling action is slightly weird; he seems to charge in, then loses all of that momentum in that jumpy delivery stride, and has to then get a lot of body into generate the pace. Not sure if he'd be far more kinder on his body and more efficient if he was to take a slower run up?

Wrong thread... Not touting for an ODI call up for Lees.

He jumps into a classic side on action, which looks a bit awkward for such a big unit. Rather than that front on McGrath action that everyone seems to be coached into these days.

Its hard to understand how hes managed to get through all the ranks of junior cricket without someone trying to remodel his action. I know that is sin to some people, but he jumps with both legs together into his delivery stride rather than plant the back foot and let the momentum of his run up open his body and generate the pace naturally.

If anything he seems to fight against the pace he brings into the crease, he has to use his upper body strength to fight the bad position his hips and legs take up. That must put huge stresses on the body, and if anything, is even limiting the pace he can release the ball because rather than harness that energy he's built up, hes having to fight against it.

I look at him bowling and cant help but think the will be under the surgeons knife having major treatments on his back by the time he turns 26. There is no way he can bowl like that through a career without major fitness issues. The stress he puts on his body must be horrendous.

Tough for fellas as big as that to keep fit anyway. Like Chris Tremlett.
