Let's see. For players that played a minimum of 6 test matches in the last 25 years, how about

Jennings
Lyth
Stoneman
Nick Knight
Shah
Malan
Read
Richard Dawson
Salisbury
Batty
Wood

Only one from the current side, but six that have been in the team in the last three years.

Tresco averaged 32 in the '01 Ashes with 3 50s, no hundreds in 10 innings. To be honest, I think we'd take that for an opener at the moment.

Realised I picked three spinners. For more seamers, consider Chris Silverwood and Saj Mahmood (same qualifier - minimum 6 test matches).

Wood is the worst averaging fast bowler to have played at least 6 tests for England. Wow.

Averaged 25 away.... combined 10 test home-away swing under 30. It felt bad at the time, but yes, Id take that home series performance now.

6 tests seems an arbitrary figure that lets me not include Ward, Adams and Illot, all I think played 5 tests. I want all three in, because they were terrible. And he only played 2 tests, but he looked so hopelessly rubbish, I think Aftab Habib should make any list.

Entirely arbitrary. But you have to draw the line somewhere. I picked 6 as it means the player was retained for at least two series so got a reasonable chance to show what they could do, and was still terrible. Players who only played for one or two tests should probably never have been picked in the first place. But yes, arbitrary.

Meanwhile, the pitch looks as flat as we feared, and India look set to make hay. The current England batting may not be the worst ever, but with all due respect to the Indian bowlers, they're not exactly McGrath, Warne, Gillespie and Lee. I shudder to think what's going to happen when this batting line-up were to face a top-class attack on English pitches, given that they fall to bits against a competent but not particularly special Indian attack.

True read some shocking stuff in the past few days with so many people in the media comparing the indian bowling attack to the West indies attack in the past.

India are in complete control here.
