Two Gary Ballances exist (not a joke at his frame).... one on paper, one I remember watching. They are different beasts. Its almost certain another 10 tests wouldnt do anything for him......I could spent time giving you all his technical faults, but I might not live to see the end of the post. He just looked out of his depth, and looked like a player you could get out so many different ways.....

England, rightfully imo, realised that and didnt want to spend time wondering if they were wrong.

Agreed that there's not much point in bringing him back now. I'm just not sure in retrospect how he can have seemed to be that out of his depth so quickly in the Ashes series, having scored mountains of runs in the previous year. Of course, having Cook and Lyth failing ahead of him didn't help.

Anyway, on to today, unsurprisingly Sri Lanka have asked for a turner, and it appears that the Kandy ground staff have obliged.

ZBGB had a very good last month in the CC for Yorks, but had a pretty poor 2017 and 18 otherwise, as I remember it. He hasn't been rehabilitated at county level and according to press refused to believe he has any technical problems. When he came back, even though he didn't deserve a recall, he clearly had learned nothing and forgotten nothing.

England's batting still looks extraordinarily flimsy, and on paper looks no better for having Stokes at three.

Burns/Jennings/Stokes/Root/Buttler/Moeen/Foakes/Curran/Rashid/Leach/Anderson.

But, SL's looks no better.

I think ballance also got diagnosed with colour blindness didn't he? Seem to remember he played in a game and complained he couldn't see the ball, and it turned out he had developed CB. There were concerns he wouldn't be able to play day night tests because of it IIRC

I do vaguely recall that.

Odd to have developed colour blindness. It's usually a genetic condition so most people who have it are born with it. It's not unheard of for it to happen in adulthood, but rare.

England win the toss and bat. Potentially huge as Sri Lanka will have to bat last on a pitch that has promised to be a turner, but England need runs on the board front-up. Stokes set to come in at 3.

England unchanged. Sri Lanka bring in Roshen Silva and Malinda Pushpakumara for Chandimal and Herath respectively.

Sri Lanka look to have a very long tail, with Dickwalla due to come in at 6. And a batting line-up with only one player who averages over 40 in tests (Matthews). Still, England hardly have an embarassment of riches on that front: Jennings, Stokes, Buttler and Ali are all low to mid 30s (can't really call Burns and Foakes after one game). In fact, discounting Foake's one game, Sam Curran at 8 holds England's second best batting average after Root...

A low scorer looks to be in the offing?

Predictable horrible start.

If England can make it to lunch no more than 3 down, it'll be a minor miracle.

Jos seems to have mistaken the first test for the only one, and now thinks the T20s have started......you could complain about that, but hes might be the only bat to get a 50.

Nice to see Stokes try to hit the cover of the ball, coming in at 1-1....
