scrumpy Jack!

Santiago hit 3 fours :o

75 to get and 3 wickets left. Could still go either way, but England favourites, perhaps

Started badly for England, Leach was a bit full, but Moeen managed two in an over with some lovely bowling.

Leach completes a well-deserved 5-fer. 8 in the match. Man of the match - Leach or Root?

England's first overseas series win since 2016, and first on the subcontinent since 2012. First in Sri Lanka since 2001. Although it's not the best Sri Lankan side ever, they beat Australia, South Africa and the West Indies at home, and Pakistan in the UAE, so they're no mugs in subcontinental conditions. Beating them as a touring team is quite the achievement.

Well done to Root for the win, and the England spinners- particularly Leach for his first Test 5-fer.

Great fielding from Stokes and Jennings. And a proper keeper in Foakes.

Probably got the attack right with just Anderson as a specialist seamer and Curran selected with the potential to score runs down the order. Well done to Bayliss and co.

England now is the best touring team having won in SA,Australia,India,SL and Bangladesh since 2010. Doubt any country has won in those countries.

Well played. England looked in good control for most parts of two test matches and results were easily predictable once they got in winning position. Three spinners formula did it. Jack and Moeen were most impressive. Jack has the best control among three but Moeen too continued to pick good number of wickets. If both of them develop the wrong one then they will be more dangerous on spinners wickets

A nice match for stats geeks with all the spin wickets. 38 - a record, and 19 for England, first time since the Swann/Monty double act in Mumbai in 2012. Only the fifth time in history that England have done that, and only the third occasion ever that they've won a game with no wickets from a fast bowler (Anderson took one in Mumbai). The only other occasions are Laker's match at Old Trafford in 1956 (obviously), and 1951 v India at Kanpur.

Also this is Joe Root's first second-innings ton in an away test. 12 of his fifteen hundreds have come in the first innings, and the only two other second-innings tons have been in England. However, the last one was only two tests ago, so hopefully this will become a habit :D

Sam Curran has a side strain, so should be out the last Test.

Could go for JB1. Or Woakes?

JB1, surely? Stokes at 3 is clearly a failed experiment. Bairstow bats better without the gloves, despite what he thinks.

If another seamer has to come in, Broad surely should be next cab off the rank, but Stokes and Anderson should be sufficient.

History suggests Colombo is easier for batting than Galle or Kandy, but who knows?

End of a fascinating match...couldn't watch the play today due to a cricketing commitment closer to home ; but happy to see England were able to finish the job this morning comfortably enough : have to say it was looking a bit dicey at time yesterday ! But that's why Test Cricket is so compelling , with the constant changes in fortune...especially on pitches like the ones prepared on this tour , that do a bit for at least one type of bowler.
Unlike many people I have no problem with home sides preparing pitches that suit their strengths : after all they are their strengths because they are the conditions in which their players developed ; so it would make no sense to try and set up something different to make life easier for the visitors. Good teams learn to handle alien conditions...and the great ones win home and away.
Not calling this England side great , mind...long way to go ! But they've done a damn good job on this trip - albeit with some luck of the toss ; and , it must be said , an opponent a lot weaker than its predecessors which boasted the likes of Jayawardene , Sangakarra , Murali and Vaas. Still tough to win here - ask Australia and SA - and they've done so with a game to spare.
Not sure I'd anoint the current spin trio as equal to Swann and Monty in India a few years ago ; but they've done what was asked of them and enabled victory in conditions that drained England's usual strengths to the point that Broad wasn't picked at all and Anderson has been a bit player ( though his tail end contributions in sticking with Curran and Foakes resulted in many more runs than the eventual winning margin ! ) Where we go from here in terms of selection for West Indies , let alone a home Ashes , is something for the future . Right now , Root and his men can take a bow...though I hope they don't take their foot off the pedal for the third match : a third win would be lovely but they're surely due to lose a toss at least so not easy.

And as for Root (though I think his captaincy is still a bit iffy at times) I think he thoroughly deserved his MoTM for that quite excellent century. Fine batting. , and clever. And turned a tricky third innings into one that set up what always seemed likely to be a winning score on a fourth day turner... A good captain's knock , indeed :salute

True that Monty and Swann were better. Monty bowled lot of unplayable deliveries on that tour and he bowled to ATG batsmen on that tour. He got sharp bounce and turn which these three spinners did not manage in this series. Wicket-keeper had tough time as well keeping to Monty. Here Ben 2 did not had to deal with as serious stuff this series. Having said that, the control of Jack Leach is so good with the rare bad ball. However, it is better he looks to get the purchase of wicket like some bowlers have managed on day 4 and Day 5 spinners wicket. Surely he will work upon that with more experience. He can be one England bowler who can do the role of bowling 35 - 40 overs while picking 5 fers as well as choking runs in same long spell innings. He can match Monty and Swann in this aspect. Rashid is less likely to choke runs as well as pick five fer.

There have been some Lions matches where Leach has really been pumelled, so I'm not sure he'll usually be as stingy with the economy rate. And there's a suspicion he's not as good in the CC away from his home Turnton wickets, so we'll have to see if he looks a wicket taker on flatter tracks. He didn't threaten much on his debut in NZ.

Mo of course does better on home pitches. It's encouraging that he's done well on dustbowls in this series. But his performances in Australia last winter made me lose a bit of faith in him as a lead spinner.

I notice only three players remain in the England team from Scrumpy Jack's debut in NZ last April.

Cook/Stoneman/Root/Vince/Malan/Stokes/Bairstow/Broad/Leach/Wood/Anderson
