Good post. Gauti was relatively much better. His innings in NZ to bat for a draw was amazing for someone other than Fab 4. Rahul is hyped by player management agency. Averaged 7 runs in South Africa. Team Management still gave him chance in England, flopped there. Again bad start. Gauti was never hyped so much.

Agreed. Both Rahul and Vijay have pretty shoddy records outside Asia (outside India, even), while Gauti did very well in tough places to open. Rahul's average outside Asia is 25 if you don't count easy runs against the West Indies...

Practice matches (lack of quality and quantity).

Driving at balls that shouldn't be driven and nicking.

India starting overseas test series badly.

Would be the same for the whole line up bar kohli and rahane I'd think

Lyon is bowling very well so far, good cricket

Gauti had weakness only outside off. Rahul has weakness against incoming deliveries. He also has issues with temperament , has not shown he can bat long for draw and less gritty as well. What I mean is that even records apart Gauti was better player overseas.

Sixer. :clap Well hit by Rohit.

56/4.

Chet is the key. Others can bat around him to recover from the top order collapse.

Problem is it'll take him all day to make 30

I wish everyone bats a day and scores 30. That would draw the match. :laugh

He has a bad overseas record but at least he is making ball old for other batsmen to follow. Doing the job of openers here taking shine off the ball. At this point we need to bat at least a day and a session to fight back. SR is not the important issue than crease occupancy in t this situation IMO.

Pujara's first run in over 12 overs - nearly 30 deliveries.

Digging in hard.

Chet still there on 36 from 126 as the Indian innings crumbles around him. Bit of a counterattack from Rohit and Pant, but counterattacking was probably not the way out of that situation. Pant out to a good ball, but could easily have been out hooking.

Needless to say India are a long way short of a good total.

The way this is going I expect to get home from work just about in time to watch the new Australian opening combination taking to the crease...

Not the start to the series India wanted.

Superb by Pujara. A well deserved hundred, giving the Indian innings some respectability. 250 may be sub-par, but it's not indefensible.

Comparisons with Dravid may not be inappropriate:

After 108 innings:
Dravid 5118 runs av 52.76, SR40, 12 centuries 27 50s
Pujara 5028 runs av 50.28, SR47, 16 centuries 19 50s
