England on course for 3-0.

Good comeback today after early troubles : their own score a bit light after YJB's excellent innings ? But looks to have been enough after that extraordinary Sri Lankan collapse. Good to see this time Stokes and Rashid have done the job after Leach and Moeen did all the heavy lifting last week...shows this team is a full set of useful performers (Jennings making a name for himself at short leg too)

Qualified because I'm not sure I rate Sri Lanka right now ; but nailing them on their own grounds like this still gets some applause , no ? Second place on the rankings may seem a bit high in light of heavy defeats in India and Australia ; but in truth other teams have similar tales to tell when they move outside their comfort zones ...I think they can take a bow.

Still a lot of work to do to turn this team into a great one ; but good progress :thumb

goodness me... SL must have fallen apart in that last session.

what has been good to see is that in each test it has been a different spinner who has done all the damage. After seemingly playing second fiddle for 2 tests, Rashid has taken the lead in this one

Actually I am struggling to recollect any other short leg better than him at this moment. Think he has highest percentile of catches taken at short leg from all the current ones.

So even on pace wickets he will be used as close catcher. Moreover if he isn't a slip fielder he can be kept at short cover, mid off, mid on or any where in outfield. I think like Bell he will now be kept at short leg else there will be severe criticism by commies and fans if other short leg fielders drop catches. It was good to see how con entrusted he was and how good his anticipation skills were fielding at short leg.

Even two spinners bowling in tandem have taken 5 to 6 wickets in one session on spinners wicket. So not totally surprising as England have three spinners operating on spinners wicket. They are well equipped to have those kind of highly successful sessions at times.

But England have taken 100 years to figure out that it's better to play at least two spinners on Asian wickets.

Have to say it again, was a brilliant spell from Ben Stokes...found pace and bounce and scared the sri lankan batsman, dosent bowl a lot or often enough for me, but is capable of game changing spells and great to see here

Wicket of Keaton on first ball of the day. Dismissed LBW for 1 run. The ball from Dilruwan Pererra stayed very low. Wonder how tough it will be tomorrow when SL bat.

ENG 3/1.

Wicket keeping of Ben Foakes who has been brilliant in this series so far will be tested. Another good keeping on Day 4 here will be like passing wicket keeping certification exam with flying colors.Dont think this match will go into Day 5.

Eng 85/4 with overall lead being 181 runs. 30 runs more and England will win imo.

Wickets have called as few England batters failed to get bat on ball. Easy LBW decisions and not received by England batsmen. Joe Root played against the turn and ended up giving a diving return catch to Pushpakumara.

Since then quick runs by Jos and Ben have taken the game away from SL. They have just scored 20 odd each but they have taken team total to a match winning one. Very important partnership of 48 from 53 balls.

England recovering from a horrendous first hour to 110/4 at lunch, JB2 leading the way.

Crucial session here. If England can bat through, they should have a lead of 300+, which looks as if it will be challenging. But get bowled out cheaply from here, and it's game on.

Don't think the opening partnership is anywhere near being resolved.

Keaton Jennings has had one good innings amongst a bunch of failures. Previously he had one good innings amongst a bunch of failures when he made a century against India. He surely can't keep a place because of his short leg skills? Back in England he will be needed less there and will succumb to seam.

Having watched Rory Burns a couple of times I can't see his technique holding up at this level. He also reminds me of a rather snivelly character who appeared in an episode of Jeeves and Wooster. His fielding skills aren't up to much either.

I think Roy has to be tried but as for who he partners I haven't a clue. My choice would be an all rounder! Sam Curran if that's the only way you can get him in the side!

It's uncanny. Every time I've checked the score today a wicket has fallen almost the very next ball.

So it's my fault. Sorry folks. Checking out for the day, hopefully England will get the lead over 300 without my negative influence.

Looks like England well placed here on a tough batting pitch. Nod to JB2 who has justified selection. The openers slot remains cursed.

Stokes was caught off a no ball- twice!

Guardian OBO has been saying the pitch is fairly flat.
