The offspinner William Somerville, who played a starring role on debut as New Zealand beat Pakistan last week, has not been included to play the upcoming home Test series against Sri Lanka. The 13-man squad that was announced on Monday had only one slow bowler in it - Ajaz Patel, who claimed a five-wicket haul in a dramatic four-run victory in Abu Dhabi last month.

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (capt), Tom Latham, Jeet Raval, Ross Taylor, Henry Nicholls, Colin de Grandhomme, BJ Watling (wk), Will Young, Tim Southee, Matt Henry, Ajaz Patel, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner

Jeet on last chance as they have picked William Young. Good pick that by selectors.

One spinner is enough for home conditions. Pace attack is strong too with Matt Henry on bench.

Latham's the one more under pressure according to interviews

Surprises me. I thought Tom Latham won't be dropped easily. He is now moved to middle order as it was considered he plays spin better. This was after his series in India were he did manage to bat well against our spinners. Having said that he has not really managed to display similar skills - he did not do well in UAE last few weeks against Pakistan. Watling is aged and will make way. That may keep Tom Latham in squad considering long term option. Other keepers are Tim Seifert but he hasn't been impressive in domestic. Glenn Phillips is also a keeper but he is considered more in shorter formats as of now. He will have to play atleast couple of FC seasons to get a call up imo. Tom Blundell is another option but he didn't grab the chance before.

Yes, I remember we both had him in our FL teams when he scored 120 in debut ? Think Watling was injured and Tom Latham was not scoring enough when Blundell got the debut. Then Tom Latham again got ahead in pecking order ahead of Blundell. Now Watling too is back. Both Watling and Latham were in squad for UAE test series. Doubt Blondell was there.

I expect a one-sided series but hope SL can at least show some sort of fight... the batsman have to stand up, Mathews of course is the key
