anyone surprised?

even remotely?

not me

another day, another chase, another failure

I said after SL that England better hope they win every toss, because the world has seen that they can't chase, so they win the toss and.... field!

way to go

they neglected and ruined their test team for this

next, they'll let Benitez go

David Willey's bowling and lower order batting would have come in handy today, just a thought :halo:

and James Vince is not an opener in any form of cricket either. England have the personnel, but not the tactical nous and blame lies with Ed Smith on this one. Has it occured for the England selectors to have a 15 man squad, which can play to all possible conditions :dunno

That's just not true

Didn't we win a significant amount of chases in a row before this world cup

So nothing like 11 or 12 in england I see to remember reading

The issue is that the ECB prepared pitches way too flat and now we've got to the world cup and normal English ODI pitches the players just aren't used to these conditions

6-1 W/l record chasing a n the last 4 years. Unbeaten chasing in England since 2015.

And then three losses in three weeks. What the actual f***?

Something is very, very wrong. Don't know if it's the rain, the fact that pitches are used or the ICC prepping differently, but teams are suddenly struggling to chase modest totals.

But something is very wrong in the England dressing room too. Ever since Hales got the boot. Losing him and Roy certainly hasn't helped - England's totals have been built on great starts, and with Vince, they are not getting them.

I just wish I could say I am surprised. At least I no longer have any expectations other than an embarassing early exit.

it's the world cup, fluffy

there's a reason why England have never won one

I think I saw that prior to this England had won something daft like 10 of the last 11 ODI's against Australia, but this is a world cup and it's different because England always blow it, and I'd always back Australia to prevail. Expecting England to beat Australia in a world cup is like expecting England to beat Germany in a penalty shoot out

The bookies have England as 1 to 16 shots to reach the last 4

I rarely 'get' odds, but I assume that is unbackable odds?

I also thought that England would do better if they were going into a pressure match, as this is (a little). Neither the Pak or SL games were.

Pretty much unbackable.

If you put on £100 and won you'd 'earn' £6.25

After today's result England are now less than one-to-two to qualify - should have laid them when the chance was there :d'oh:

Well, I don't think that could have gone much better for Australia. Fantastic to see Berendorf do so well, and I think he was hard done by not to get motm. I was fully expecting Vince's dismissal, and in that manner - but I was watching for it on the first ball. We've seen Berendorf do it so often in the BBL, that my mind was trained for it. I suppose this was his Lords debut? How great to get a Fivefor first up. Do they have an honour board for ODIs there?

Injuries look like being Coulter-Nile's only hope of making it back into the side for the next three, hopefully four, games.

I assume that the finals are 1/4, 2/3? It gives Aus extra reason for wanting to win the next two and wanting some one - England!?! - to beat India. Avoiding India in the semis would be desirable, imo.

Seems to be a rainfree day forecast for Edgbaston, even if cloudy and dark. So presumably we'll get some play.

11.30 start, 50 overs still.

Pasted from the Guardian:

If New Zealand win today, they will reach the semi-finals for the fourth consecutive World Cup. No other team has qualified for the last three, never mind four.
