Stupid format. Only 10 teams, yet 45 matches to decide four semi-finalists?

Only cricket.

Since the 2007 World Cup, when India and Pakistan went out early, the ICC have been desperate to ensure that there is no chance of the 'big three' (England, Australia and India) going out early, due to the loss of TV revenue and have kept revising formats to try and guarantee they stay in as long as possible. This has now gone so far as to exclude most of the associates, because of the risk one of them might cause an upset and knock out a big name (in 2015 it was England) before the later stages of the tournament. But heaven forbid a World Cup should pass without an England-Australia, Australia-India or India-Pakistan match.

Other sports look on the World Cup as a chance to grow the game and spark interest around the globe. They're keen to expand to as many countries as possible. Cricket's going backwards.

Completely agree bfl. They are doing the same in the WT20 with a preliminary round that the big teams don't participate in. Another example of money trumping common sense. I would personally way prefer to see 4 groups of 4 then the top 2 from each advancing into a knockout, like the football Euros used to do pre 2016.
A man convinced against his will is a man of the same opinion still.

Yes, the 2007 WC had the best and most interesting format.

This one could hardly be worse. More like a condensed ranking programme than a cup competition.

It still holds some interest, but probably the minimum possible.

Such is England's success recently, I have little doubt they will beat SA today.

Quote from director of ticketing and marketing for the WC on tickets not arriving.

“We are seeing absolutely peanuts numbers of those sort of people (whose tickets are not arriving) and Ticketmaster tell us it is absolutely normal for some tickets to be lost,”

So they're using a company who seem to accept they will lose tickets. But he didn't know this could happen. Quite apart from the startling English.

The usual panglossian UK cricket administer. who inspires little confidence.

And there's the usual missed opportunity with it not being on terrestrial tv.

Great recovery. Including from your boy, Sussex...

Rubbish commentary from BBC (Tuffers and Aggers). Every four is passed without comment. Every mishit (and the wicket) is questioned regarding whether they really should be just waiting and seeing for the next five overs for whichever reason is to hand. What I think of as the Nasser Hussain reasoning.

So Archer starts and Wood misses out. I guess thy'll rotate the bowlers but I expect this is the side that England see as their first choice.

Morgs putting on the boosters, so England not suffering for the loss of Root and Stokes. Still on for a big score.
