England are going to be short with the tail in....and Australia over a 100 away. Needed to declare 10 overs earlier

Ten overs earlier they would have left Australia just 180 to get... Not realistic.

I agree.

Root's character does suggest he's a little negative, and if this was the last game of the series, and we were 1 down then declare but with three to play, the declaration was fine. In hindsight, 20 minutes earlier may have proved decisive but not 10 overs.

Might have been a hint of an off-cutter but the ball wasn't aimed directly at Smith, who took a leg guard and moved across with a view of playing an inventive shot. There was only two shots on offer - an uppercut (had Smith stayed at leg) or leave the ball alone.

It wasn't that much of a dangerous ball. Smith's actions made it dangerous, by ducking into it. The same with the one that collected him on the arm, Smith handled it badly, imo.

I have the same view as this.

He seemed determined to get his bat out the way, thus putting a very high price on his wicket.

Poorly played on a pitch that offered something for the bowlers. What it did do was encourage archer to keep bowling short, when I think if he had pitched the ball further up he would have presented more wicket taking deliveries, especially in the second innings.

Mitch1 said on comms that Archer wasn't even bowling that short...... back of a length at best....... but he has the ability to get some of them to rear up wildly. Smith was ducking into his head shot and so was Labuschagne when he was poleaxed too.

Cummins and Starc will be busy boys in the nets this week

Archer has been painted as the Bad Boy over here. Of course there's a good dose of pantomime about it all, but some of the stuff I've seen is pretty vindictive. Very uncalled for, as well, imo. What a hero he would be lauded as if he were Australian (qualified).

Whether it actually WAS the spur, or just a handy tool, the image of Archer having a smile/bit of a joke with Buttler while Smith was being attended to is what is the proof of the evil ways of The Bad Joffra.

I can imagine the furor if Aus had gone on to lose the Lords test.

It might have helped if Joffra had shown more concern, though that should not matter. The Australian press will whip up the public with talk about Hughes whilst also ignoring Australia's bowlers pitching it short. They always need a villain and they have found a new one. The fact that Joffra has taken out Australias only hope of winning the next test just add more wood to the fire.

Cummins must have bowled half of all his deliveries short in the last match.

Bring it on, I say. Test cricket is better for a group of fast bowlers charging in. Nothing finer to watch than genuine quicks steaming in.

no doubt the Aussie papers were raising concerns about short pitched bowling when Mitch1 was terrorising England batsmen all over Australia. Say what you like about Australian's.... they are usually very even handed about these things
