Without being hugely impressive the debutants have probably done enough to have a chance of selection in Pakistan.

Renshaw saw an Alistair Cook level of patience today

Handscomb showed control and determination and is the best of the three.

Maddinson showed bursts of talent but was the least comfortable.

I predict that Renshaw and Handscomb are there for the long haul, and Maddinson will find himself relegated (if he is lucky) to the shorter versions of the game.

and from my only vision of Renshaw, I would be surprised if we DO see him in the shorter versions.....

FTS, what provoked the fall from grace of Tim Paine. See he did a decent job for Melbourne today. Was always quite a decent wicket keeper and I would put him in the mix in amongst Nevill and Wade.

Basically, he looked rubbish behind the stumps in England in 2010, but made no costly mistakes. Let some byes through on balls that swung past the bat, and was diving all over the place like a goalkeeper trying to parry balls rather than cleanly catch them. He didnt look competent at all.

He then went to India, where he missed a comical stumping of Suresh Raina at Mohali. Raina rushed out the crease and wasnt even in the frame, but Paine fumbled the catch, dropped the ball, and missed the easiest stumping you would ever see. Australia lost the game by one wicket, and Raina's 90 odd was a large reason for that.

In the second test in Bangalore, Paine also dropped Murali Vijay..... who went on to have a 300 run partnership with Tendulkar, a partnership that sealed the series and test win, making the drop look all that more costly.

Haddin got the gloves back, and scored a timely 150 in Brisbane the next test along with taking a stunning catch by memory (although it might have been in the test after). He also scored a 50 in every game of that Ashes series, in a series where the Aussie bats really got a pounding, and Haddin therefore became undroppable.

Haddin was always a strange one though. In 2009 he batted well in the Ashes series to start with, but he upset a lot of Aussie fans at the Oval that year when Hussey batted out of his skin to save a test (and therefore the Ashes), but Haddin came on and for some reason decided he was in a ODI game and came in to play his shots, ending up skying (I think) Graeme Swann into the deepfield after not long. It was hardly probable that Australia would have saved the game, but his attitude was heavily questioned.

After that, you felt like the selectors were waiting for him to fail to punish him (but after an Ashes series where he had done well with the bat), and it subsequently came after a couple of tests without a score at the start of 2010 vs Pakistan, and Paine got his chance and never took it.

Whats worth noting though, is during this time between the West Indies series in 2009 and probably the end of 2011/start of 2012, he was keeping brilliantly. In fact in the aforementioned WI series, he made a few unbelievable acrobatic catches. So Paine was always a stop gap in the belief that Haddin's batting form would come good. And he came back and hit the ground running.

Haddin was a lot like Matt Prior. Was terrible keeper at the start, but who became at his prime a very competent and reliable keeper who took the odd stunner. After 2012 though by memory his batting fell apart and never came back, his keeping slowly drifted too after that, and he held onto his spot well past his usefulness to the side

What's the Australian analysis of their summer?

5-2 in Tests
7-1 in ODI
1-2 in T20

Average?
