DAY ONE REPORT.

England are on top after Fred Trueman rattles India out for 158. Trueman's 4-38, coupled with three wickets from the spin of Derek Underwood, rocked India. Three Indian batsmen, Dravid, Prasanna and Srinath, were out for ducks whilst a further four were out for less than ten, Sehwag (3), Mankad (7), Dev (4) and Kumble (2).

Laxman with 41* and Gavaskar with 38 were the top run scorers.

England faced an hour before stumps and got to 37-0 with Cook on 21* and Hutton on 16*.

DAY TWO REPORT

England put a premium on their wickets as they look to bat the day out. Hutton and Cook batted for most of the day as they crawled to 78 off 362 balls and 84 off 257 balls. It was heavy going for the English bowlers until just before tea when Srinath bowled Hutton and just after tea when Mankad got Cook lbw.

Hobbs then out on a relatively quickfire 53 off 104 balls before he was caught behind off the bowling of Dev.

Overnight England are 290-3 with Barrington 56* and Hammond 9*
