The CMS World Series

Postby The Professor » Sat Mar 21, 2020 12:46 am

As we are all going off our rocker with the lack of cricket, I have been thinking what public service I could bring to the table......and then it struck.

Over on the Games forum we have 11 members who have picked two players to compete over the course of the claendar year....who do not look like they will be competing too much over the calendar year.

So why not take those 22 players - split them into two teams and simulate the games using Cricket Captain over a 5 Test, 5 ODI and 5 T20 series.

So let's get this going.

The teams were mainly random but I made one switch to ensure that there was an even number of bowlers across both teams and another switch to ensure Banton was on one team and Handscomb was on the other to ensure a wicket keeper on each side.

The teams run thus:

CMS A

Guptil
Banton
Kohli
Smith
Gill
Stokes
Maxwell
Holder
Ackermann
Gregory

CMS B

Azam
Warner
Root
Sharma
Labuschagne
Head
Handscomb
Abbott
Nabi
Maharaj
Harmer

Day One of First Test is tomorrow

The ANZAC spirit loomed large on Day One of the CMS World Series.

The A team lost the toss and were inserted and lost Banton for just 4 in just the 7th over but from there a series of partnerships held together by Martin Guptill and then Aaron Finch saw them to stumps on 243-7.

After the loss of Banton caught by Simon Harmer off the bowling of Kyle Abbott, Guptill and Smith put on the largest partnership of the day with both looking comfortable through to lunch.

After the resumption Smith got his 50 but then nicked one to Labuschagne - the only wicket of the day for Maharaj who laboured with figures of 1-91 by the time stumps were called.

After he lost Smith, Guptill looked nervy and escaped numerous nicks and edges as well as some near lbw calls however muscled on. Nabi was not called on as much as Maharaj and Harmer bowled 69 overs between them, however when he did he mad an impact. His first scalp was Virat Kohli who he got lbs for just 6 before he returned for a second spell after tea to claim the equally dangerous Ben Stokes for 12 - however it was the quick stumping from Peter Handscomb that should claim the credit.

Guptill survived until after tea when he was claimed by Harmer for 78. This triggered something of a mini collapse. The woefully under bowled Kyle Abbott returned for his second and last spell of the day to remove Shubman Gill for 17 and then Stokes tried to go big against spin and failed. One mainstay throughout this last session was Finch. Batting much further down the order than is normal he played expressively and comfortably and stands on 63* overnight - joined by Colin Ackermann who was asked to bat earlier than normal so as to preserve Glenn Maxwell for the morning of Day Two.
