I agree that some counties are less visible than others. But these days, players are flagged up at u19 level, and they come from the more visible counties, or join them early on. Still, Moeen has a chance this year.

No I think it was the West Indies game a few years back at Wantage Road.

He went on that tour of Australia I mentioned above, and played at home against Australia and Bangladesh.

I think you're sort of right with Compo in that he only played for the Lions when the selectors had already decided to pick him for the Test team, rather than as a testing stage. He played for U19 though which is a huge denominator in England selection.

Off the top of my head, Pattinson would have been the last player to go straight in the Test team.

I think Gidman played for England A about five+ years ago by the way. I may be wrong.

Shouldn't be picked for a test based on his ODI form, ala Morgan.

It's not just based on odi form...his 4 day form in the past couple of seasons, has been outstanding, and he deserves a shot..also he's better than Roland-Jones at this stage..
