Cook probably thinks he can do the job of both openers so doesn't need a partner.

Lyth will open against New Zealand baring an injury between now and then. Tough break having to front up to two very good pace attacks in your first two series.

Went for Hales ; in hopes that he might learn to transfer his CC and t20 form to the five day game. He would bring the required touch of aggression into the top order currently dominated by accumulators - that is , he would if he proved good enough ; which is open to question I admit.

For now , Lyth will get the job of course. And I have no problem with that - he earned a spot and has the right to the next chance. Arguably could have had it three Tests ago but that's history now...if he's good enough we will know it by end of summer...
