Slater did well against England. He absolutely loved playing against England too. I could never understand why he didn't cut it in the ODI arena.

Some great players in there...Obviously impossible to make meaningful comparisons across different eras ; but I tend to assume that the qualities that make a player great in his own time would ensure his success in another were he transplanted.
So I voted Hobbs and Sutcliffe. A package deal , as it were. You could make a fine case for several others ...Morris , Hutton ; without even looking at the moderns...but I reckon the partnership aspect is important in selecting openers and I can't go past those two.

In modern Ashes terms I think Slater is quite a good call...
