All time Ashes XI: Four and Five.

Postby Arthur Crabtree » Sun Jul 12, 2015 11:30 am

Minimum runs 1050 (that extra 50 leaves out Gatting, but allows Hammond a second chance, not against Bradman). Most of these players are from relatively recently.

I've only got one English in my team so far. Border and Steve Waugh this time.

Border and Chappell.

It was Border or S Waugh, to bat with the elegant Chappell. The team could do with a left hander, plus he'd be my captain.

Barrington, if possible batting 4 and 5. Border a distant second.

You can vote for Kenny once above, at least Splinters.

Waugh and AB tick so many boxes. They were great players generally (so it limits the argument that they beat weakish England sides). They played for a long time scoring easily the most tons. They have very high averages. They were strong personalities. They scored tough runs. They emerged out of a weak period to help create a legacy for the team. The only thing I have against them is a lack of glamour.

Good argument for KP too, given the attacks he's faced. Greg Chappell was a great.

Barrington is England's greatest post war middle order bat. For the Australians I'd have Chappell followed by Border then Waugh.

Fair enough. But as an Ashes player, three tons is a little thin, for all the excellent Ashes average. I routinely assume Barrington is England's best bat since WWII, given his record (give or take Amiss ;)).

Thorpey is arguably England's best bat since Barrington, but he never won the Ashes, and his record only ok to good v the Aussies. So I didn't mind leaving him off. He scored about 950 Ashes runs.

Vote is going to be tight.

I'm going to put a few of the best voted for runners up so far in the vote for number six, with some all rounders, so people can choose to have six batters.

Barrington and Chappell so far. The CMS top five now includes all players from pre-1980.

Went Border and Barrington. Nearly G Chappell ...but I wanted a left hander.

Puts a tie back on. Maybe Aidan will break it, if still contemplating.

Two days left on this. Waugh is going to make it. Border a little vulnerable.
