All time Ashes XI: The spinner.

Some of this is a bit complicated. It's not always obvious what some early bowlers dispensed. Some bowled a mixture, and for others it's not clear what they bowled at all. Some will know more about this than me, so I'll take advise. But what I'm doing is choosing those that cricinfo call specialist spinners. Of those that bowl a mixture, Warwick Armstrong and Bill Johnston will turn up in the all rounders (as will a couple of others here, if not selected for spin). Maurice Tate will have to take his chances among the pace bowlers. Going to put SF Barnes in among the pace bowlers, and if not chosen, for the mixture of pace and spin I'll put up for number 11.

So, these are specialist spinners, minimum wickets 50, chosen by average. Starting with the lowest average.

Not going to make an all pace attack an option. Or an all spin attack for that matter.

Also went for Warne. Made players like R Smith, Stewart and more look ordinary.

Me too. Though I had a think about Laker, and might go for him as my final pick. Nice to see Bobby Peel get a nod.

Has to be Warne , doesn't it . Stats have it ; and he was magic ; personality as much as craft. Though he did have the advantage of bowling to a lot of batsmen who never learned how to play spin...

See someone voted for Benaud...I loved watching him too. And Laker ; though I was very young when I saw him bowl.

Peel was before my time :)

Only five games for Bob. Had a decent series though.

Without Warne it would have been a competitive field.

The blank brothers were quite a formidable bunch of siblings when it came to Ashes cricket.

All bowlers. Ma Blank always prayed she'd have a little batter. Someone to help her around the house, that she could dress up real pretty. But her dream never came true. Just a whole lot of bowlers, spittin' and cussin'.
