All time Ashes XI: The fast bowlers.

Postby Arthur Crabtree » Sat Jul 18, 2015 11:10 am

Still delaying number six, this vote is for fast bowlers. Below are the averages for every Ashes paceman to take more than seventy wickets.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=bowling

Some of the players who don't get selected here will go into a trade off for number six, if an all rounder, or number eleven to go into a repechage with some remaindered spin bowlers.

We're losing something in sensationalist nicknames. The Demon Spofforth. The Terror Turner, the pigeon McGrath...

I left out early bowlers Monty Noble and Tom Richardson to get some more familiar names in (well down the list). I'll include them in the last bowling spot list if anyone demurs.

Some names that didn't get in, on stats: Larwood, McDermott, Botham, Bedser, Willis, Statham. Rodney Hogg took 56 wickets at 17 in Ashes. Ryan Harris 57 at 21. Typhoon Tyson only took 32 Ashes wickets, almost all in one series.
I always say that everybody's right.

Gone for Lillee and Trueman. Tempted by the Demon. McGrath in Ashes is slightly inferior to Alderman in terms of record, but might ultimately go for Barnes if these three get repechaged for the last bowling spot. Best Ashes SR for any bowler with 70+ wickets is... Mitch1.

McGrath & Lillee for me.

Thought Willis might have been on the list.

Bob was next on the list. He might be on the list of 15 candidates, but I don't think he'd make the top two.

Not attracting much voting yet. Fast bowling poll is like a midterm by-election.

Moving along quickly aren't we ?

Trueman and Lillee for me. Could have had McGrath , could have had Snow...heck we are spoiled for options ; but I really don't envy the other team's openers confronted by those two glaring down the pitch..

I went with FOT & Ooh Ah. A no brainer, really.

This closes in a couple of hours. Looks like there's a tie break.

I'll set number eleven tomorrow.

I picked Lillee and Trueman. As DKL has a better SR, econ and average, and has the most wickets by a pace bowler in Ashes history, he can go into the team. Fred will be in the names for the last bowling slot.

I would have voted for Lillee and McGrath.

Decent team, that.

McGrath always strikes me as an underrated bowler. The man has over 500 Test wickets at 21 yet is rarely mentioned when people talk about the "great" bowlers.

I think it's the absence of exceptional pace at some part of his career. And he lacks an air of athleticism. But he polled best on this. But true, Steyn is the only bowler post the Ws that gets called a great. Shoaib and Asif have credentials too. Possibly Pollock, Harris and Johnson.
