All time Ashes XI: Number Six.

Postby Arthur Crabtree » Mon Jul 20, 2015 5:00 pm

No obvious way of selecting options for this.

I looked at runs scored in the late middle order to get extra batters for those who want six batters. But I didn't want players of little reputation, so I chose the top averaging batters from 5-7, who also qualified in other polls. That gave me Compton, Pietersen and Clarke. Next were Barrington and Gower, but they've been in two polls already, so I left them out.

Then I chose the top batters at 6 and seven, which thankfully gave me some key all rounders.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=batting

Then I went down the all rounder list looking at high batting averages, who have taken more than 20 wickets and scored at least one ton. That got me FS Jackson, Miller and Woolley. Then low bowling averages (minimum 20 wickets), who had scored 400 runs and one hundred. That got me Johnny Briggs and Keith Walters. The last three on this list are from reputation.

It's inevitable I've missed someone. If anyone wants to name a player, I'll count it as a vote.

Stats wise, Steve Waugh walks this, but he's already in.
I always say that everybody's right.

I went Keith Miller. Could bat in the top five, opened the bowling, and had a famous sense of perspective.

I like Miller - though he was just too early for me to really remember. Had to be Botham though - he won too many Ashes battles almost singlehanded . Well he turned them , at least.
This team really doesn't need an extra full time batsman. But any team could do with a man who can win you a game with bat or ball.
Beefy for me.

Edit : Just don't make him captain :)

I voted for Beefy. he loved playing against the Aussies, and of course was an England great.

Should have had Monty Noble in this. 115 Ashes wickets and batting average over 30.

Nickname, Mary Ann?

Shane Watson, surely.

I'll count that as a vote for Watto then...

Wonder if Mitch3 would have got a vote?

Someone could vote for KP.

That would turn the tables.

This would also be a 200 page thread.
