Would Yorkshire beat England in a test series?

Postby Alviro Patterson » Wed Sep 09, 2015 4:13 pm

Shamelessly stolen by Cricinfo

Now that Yorkshire have retained the County Championship and a number of players going on to representing England, would the White Rose County with their strongest XI beat England in a test series?

There's only Root who comes from Yorks who is a must pick for England. All the others arguably wouldn't be in England's best side. So it's got to be England.

Ironically, Yorks aren't a strong limited overs side, but have three players in the current team, and Root would be in if not being rested. That's more than in the Test team.

agreed

root is the only yorkie guaranteed his place based on form this year even tho there are 4 or 5 others that would be in the frame

Yorkshire are obviously strong but don't have the same quality 1 through 11 as that England team above do imo and sometimes its how strong your weakest players are that is a better indication of how good you are

Of course, the only way England could beat Yorkshire is if they select Yorkshire players for England duty. If Joe Root is with Team England, it's only fair Kane Williamson plays for Yorkshire :D

Lyth, Lees, Williamson, Ballance, Bairstow, Leaning, Rashid, Bresnan, Plunkett, Sidebottom, Brooks

Opening batsmen England are ahead
Middle to lower order batsmen it's dead level
Bowling attack - too close to call, both sides have unique pace bowlers but Yorkshire have the better spinner and are more likely to take 20 wickets.

I agree Yorkshire would have the better spinner but no way am I going to agree that pace attack is as good than the 4 I included in the potential England side above

I think England's superior pace attack would tip the balance in their favour.

I think there is a need to step back and appreciate the likes of Cook and Bell have been been fronting up to the best in the world, not the best in the LVCC. There is a huge gulf in class between Test cricket and the LVCC, just look at Lyth who went from scoring over 1600 runs in a season to looking hopeless at the top level. Bairstow has yet to make a serious case for being a first choice member of the Test side yet averaged close to 100 in the LVCC or Ballance who was recently dropped.

Easy to take too much away from Yorkshire's domestic performances.

As is sometimes said, a key to being a strong county side is having players who are just slightly below international standard.
