Herath probably. Lyon could be mentioned. Might need to see Yasir bowl outside of Asia (though none of these who have played away have done that well).

I'm only thinking Tests though.

herath past his best now, hasn't actually bowled well in the past 12 months got out bowled by yasir and Ashwin recently and even WI have played him well recently.

Lyon a tough one since he bowls well as a 4/5 bowler but not been good as the main attacking option in the team.

think it is quite tight for the title right now.
Yasir got the better variations and is a leggie.
Ashwin getting the drift and is in total command of the ball now he been in incredible form in the past 5-6 months kind of reminded me of Swann at his best.

Also it is hard comparing spinners considering they have different roles in the team, for example Ashwin has to take wickets overseas and is the main bowler whereas Lyon/Swann could be holding spinner and are not under pressure to take wicket in the first innings overseas.

Herath imo. Although Yasir has been exceptional in very small test career, Herath has shown longevity.I would not compare Yasir with Herath at this stage. Agarkar was the quickest ODI bowler to take 50 wickets. His career later was very bad. 1 over 10 runs does not mean 500 runs in 50 overs. Herath has gone through injuries, home and away tours, batsmen decoding his bowling, aeging factor etc etc whereas Yasir has to be tested against all such things. Yet after many opportunities and challenges that more matches offer, Herath is a spinner who can demolish batting lineup with 5 fers and 10 fers. I would not at all compare Yasir with Herath. Herath has been exceptional as when he takes wickets he takes 5 fers in innings or 10 fers. He literally has shown he can tear the batting lineup of opposition when he is on song.

On current form, I'd go with Ashwin. Potentially, Yasir Shah is the best bet for all conditions though IMO.

Probably should add lyon to it, didn't really add him since I don't really rate him as a spinner.

Excluded Herath since he probably past his best right now but at his peak he would be better than Ashwin/Y Shah/Lyon.

Herath didn't really do much in the same pitches Y Shah/Ashwin caused mayhem in.

yasir is a little too one dimensional for me

the lack of a good googly or slider will limit his potential when teams start getting used to him

i would say mishra is a better leggie than him, yasirs stats are very much skewed by playing all of his tests so far in Asia

ashwin is the same though with an average of 22 in asia and 56 everywhere else (if my maths is correct)

herath is poor away from sri lanka

so i would pick lyon atm probably as the most well rounded spinner

Lyon took 3/422 when Australia toured UAE last year.

Lyon is good home and away. Just no good neutral.

Like I said before Lyon stats are so misleading just like Ashwin or Sub C spinners outside asia are misleading.

having 3-4 quality pace bowlers makes a huge difference in Aus/NZ/Eng/sa

Anyway Lyon biggest weakness is probably that he isn't that great in taking wickets when it turns and I never really saw him being a wicket taking threat but he is good at keeping things tight and a holding bowler.
