Part of the problem I suppose, is that Australia produced a string of world dominating players for practically all 11 positions, whilst WI probably had the finest team of the lot in the last 50 years (and by some considerable margin, too)..... but a long time ago. England could probably only submit ITB as a genuine candidate for inclusion, and India had some great players who all had careers that lasted until the zimmer frame ban prompted their retirement. Careers so long that they were almost guaranteed to feature strongly in the averages and with landmark achievements

To be genuinely representative the XI should dominated by Aussie players, with a helping of WI players, with all the candidates from the other test nations fighting each other for the odd place in the team

I'm a bit surprised Viv wasn't a shoo in.

I'd guess WI and Australia will be prominent among the bowlers.

Playing a long time might even hurt the averages, given the difficulty factor in maintaing form over so many years. Of course, you have to guard against just looking at achievement based on large accumulation of numbers.

Warne
Marshall
Holding
McGrath (perhaps Lilley)
it should be,

but I have my fears that it will turn out to be
Harby
Srinath
Sharma
Khan

with Kapil as the all rounder

too cynical..... it won't be Sharma, so pick one from McGrath, Lilley, Thompson, Marshall, Holding, Roberts, Garner, Ambrose, Croft, Warne Murali, Wasim, Waquar

I might be wrong but isn't this forum dominated by English folk.
So far the only dodgy pick is Sehwag,
The only reason India are a dominant pick right now is because in the past 50 year their probably have had the best batting line up and most importantly a lot of those names have been in recent times.

Also lots of the Australian/West indies greats were the bowlers.
Barring Viv richard/Lara they haven't really got anyone pushing the batsman slots.
Ponting is probably the closest for the Aussies.

Also, you can balance a player maintaing a place in a highly competitive team, who doesn't coast even when the wins are always coming. Against a lone hand playing in a struggling side. It might be harder being Lara than being Ponting.

I have a lot of regard for Allan Border, first for playing with so much character in a losing side, and then being key in a strong winning side.

As this board is mainly used by people from the UK, most of the vote is being cast as neutrals, as England players won't be realistic contenders.

and yet for how many years did those players help their team to dominate world cricket?

not many, I'll wager

About 5-7 years.
Between 2003-2011 india probably in the top 3 in the test world.
Only Australia being ahead because of a better bowling attack.
Hardly ever lost a test series in that time barring defeats to Australia in 2004 and 08, and a close 2-1 defeat to SA in 2006.
Barring that won or drew series home and away.

Thinking about it if Australia didn't have an all time great team, India would have been number 1 in the world.
Only really lacked pace bowlers.

Aussies should be ok.
Warne, Mcgrath should get in + Gilchrist.
WI might be the one where numbers are short.

Warne should get in. McGrath has a lot of bowlers to get past.

Only Flower or ABDV can stop Gilly. Sanga only took off when he stopped being wk.
