Arthur Crabtree wrote:Bell averages 160 with three tons v BD. To be fair to Bell's stats, classy players like JK,SRT and Sanga got a lot of tons v BD/Zim. And Iron Steve Waugh averaged 250.

that not the issue though the issue is he doesn't score runs against other teams.
Averages 35 against Australia
28 vs New zealand

the only other team he scored well against was Sri lanka barring that he mostly average around low 40s to high 30s.
The way people talk about him you sensed he one of the greats and has a batting average of 50.

Bell gets quite a bit of criticism on here, tbh. He was or is, a good test match player. 20 tons and an average of 42 is fine.

He has his supporters, of course. But I'm not sure he has the reputation of being one of the greats. I'm not sure any England batters since 65 have that reputation, but I think Boycott, Gower, Thorpe, Gooch, KP, Trott and Cook would all be rated ahead of him, maybe some others too.

From what I see around MBs, Indian fans seem to rate Bell quite highly.

And he did play some great innings, perhaps some notably against type. He was a good player, though the Bellievers couldn't allow any weaknesses.

Still, not even the chief druid of the cult of Ian Bell would pick him as one of the best two middle order batters of the past fifty years....

Anyway Bell one of those cricketers that look pretty in the eye but don't deliver the numbers.
generally people love them or hate them, this thread shouldn't even be about bell so taking this thread back to topic voted for Lara and Tendulkar.

Lara because he was the best batsman to watch in my era watching cricket quite sad wasn't able to see all his career only saw the last few years.
Tendulkar is the most complete batsman in the last 50 years.
No one has ever average 40 + against all team with good sample size or 40 + in every country.

Tendulkar was also the most complete batsman ever but sadly after the injuries in early naughties he stopped becoming more attacking and was more of the batsman people remember now.
but he could in his day bat like Lara or some of the modern attacking players these days.

one of his greatest knocks wasn't even a proper game.
destroyed Pakistan attack in a exhibition t20 game in 1989, by reports that was a mordern day T20 innings.

Zaheer Abbas averaged 50 batting at 4-6, but only scored 2500 runs. Classy player as well.

this is probably the list where batting in the 80s or 90s or batting majority in the 2000s makes a difference.

http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=batting
batting averages in the 90s.
Tendulkar 58
Steve Waugh 53
Lara 51
Googh 51
Dravid 49
Ricky ponting 44
Kallis 41

in the naughties loads of batsman average 50-60+
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=batting

Looking at the list would remove Chanderpaul, Hussey not sure they are that good really to be in the list.

I remember him falling over his stumps sweeping Monty.

Great batter, difficult to hide in the field.

Robin Smith v West Indies. What a contest that was.
