I am always deeply saddened by the death of the gloveman, it is an art that has long since been cast aside from the game in the pursuit of batting.

For me, a wicketkeeper needs to be someone who takes chances, there is zero point averaging over 40 with the bat if you are going to drop catches that give the other team 100+ runs.

In an all time team, you really don't need the batting do you?

agree keeping is a lost art.
far too many *modded* keepers around and the obsession with batting is getting too much.
England currently probably produce the best keepers but a lot of them can't even get games for their counties because they can't bat.

Far too many mediocre keepers filling all domestic leagues.

Wanted to go for Gilchrist but went for Flower. Very underrated, did not have the cushion or support of a strong batting lineup. Also did not have the luxury of never having to face the best bowling lineup of his era. If he was in any other team he would have had a longer and better career imo.

From the list it's Knott for me but I rate Bob Taylor as the best I have seen.

I stand by Gilly. He was a good keeper (not as good as Healy) and an often sensational bat who dealt with pressure well. I like Knotty, but you can't claim he, Healy, Wasim Bari or Bob Taylor didn't miss chances too. If my side is 70-5, I want Gilchrist batting. And if we're using the argument that these batters will get runs, then why is the theory that these bowlers will make another chance not as relevant?

People will always bang on about keepers nowadays being this and that, but Gilchrist was a near faultless keeper who made some sensational catches in his career, and very little mistakes. His batting ability masked that a lot. Its become cliche to talk of him as an average keeper, but I think thats both lazy and incorrect.

Played the same amount of games as Knott, who made his name catching for Underwood..... far more stumpings too.

I think in general its rather glossy coverage about the various merits of old school keepers. Modern era keepers catch far more wickets per innings, and I do believe the porportion of lbws/catches since hawk-eye came in and proved a lot of misconceptions about what the ball does after pitching far more likely that non caught wickets are given.

Id take Gilchrist anyday of the week.

Maybe Gilchrist's keeping on the 2005 tour made an impression on those who are not so enthusiastic about his status. It was the most highly visible Test series of his life, and he missed a few chances.

TBH Gilchrist was a top class keeper even without his batting he was the best in Australia available.
The keepers than generally stand out for being a batsman converted keepers are Prior and Dhoni.
I don't really believe in fletcher statement that you can make a keeper, at best you can make an average keeper, not sure you can ever make a keeper be very good against spin or on Day 4 and 5.
Prior and Dhoni were both average behind the stumps, Prior did get good in his later years but nothing to get excited about, dhoni only really excelled against the spinners and close to the stumps struggled with the wobble ball and swing and probably suffered from the same injuries as prior stopped diving in recent times.
Still think having a top class keeper that averages 30-35 with the bat is better than a batsman converted keeper.
Although I think you will have the rare success stories like Prior and Dhoni.

Be interesting to see if england go with the better bat Bairstow or the better keeper Buttler.

this is the case which I hate about modern day keeping or selection.
Uthappa is an awful keeper but because he wants to get into the indian team in the future he basically decided to become a keeper so he get into the team.

Which is ridiculous because the better keeper in the state doesn't get a game with the gloves even though he probably a decent prospect for the indian team.

Loads of batsman are deciding to add keeping into their repertoire so it looks better in their CV for selection purposes.
This is happening in all countries.

Personally think only batsman that have a clear talent for keeping should get converted.
Buttler and Sanju Samson both look like a good prospect with the gloves, keeping looks natural to them.
Ben Foakes is another exciting keeping prospect, Harvey Hosein is another exciting keeping prospect.
but a lot of the exciting prospect hardly ever get a game with the gloves.

Knotty emerging as the gloveman choice. Fair enough. Maybe Healy could contest that.
