July Long Form Player of the Month

Postby The Professor » Sun Jul 31, 2016 7:17 pm

Due to the fact that, in my mind, the ODI and T20 players of the month pick themselves I have bundled together all longer forms of the game into one poll. Anyone playing in a Test, County Championship, A Team or Varsity match was eligible for the poll. Pick your most worthy candidate below:

Gareth Batty (Surrey)

The veteran England international is having something of a renaissance in the longer form of the game. After a quiet start to the month he has exploded with bat and ball in all forms of the game. More pertinently for here he has scored 118 runs across 5 innings and has claimed ten wickets at an average of 32.4.

Ben Brown (Sussex)

The wicketkeeper-batsman scored 189 runs over 4 innings as well as getting 5 catches behind. The highlight of his month came with his 159* plus three caught behind against Glamorgan. His average with the bat was 47.2.

Aneurin Donald (Glamorgan)

The young Welshman didn't get nearly enough credit for his record equalling joint fastest double hundred in the game against Derbyshire. It was his only Longer Form game of July but 234 off 230 balls isn't to be sniffed at. The duck off the next innings just adds a hint of amusement too.

Daniel Escott (Oxford University)

Fairly obscure one here but....why not. He is one of a number of people on this list who has been included off the back of one outstanding performance. In the Varsity match against Cambridge University he got 36 and 125 with the bat and 6/71 with the ball.

Stevie Eskinazi (Middlesex)

The young Middlesex prospect burst onto the scene in the back end of June with a huge score and then started this month with 157 v Yorkshire. Overall in the month he has scored 175 runs at an average of 58. He is currently back with the seconds but is a real talent.

Ben Foakes (Surrey)

The young England hopeful continued to put some good publicity behind his name with a strong 141* against Hampshire. Overall he got 179 runs in 4 innings - averaging 44.8. He also caught 5 wickets with the gloves.

Prince Masvaure (Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe A)

Zimbabwe nor Zimbabwe A have been setting the world alight of late but Masvaure has been making a bit of an impact with the bat for both the senior team and the little brother. Over his 6 innings for both teams he scored 319 runs at an average of 53.2. He also chips in with a few wickets getting three across the two games with South Africa A.

Toby Roland-Jones (Middlesex)

Good form from the Middlesex bowler has seen him flirt with the England team over the last month. His form has seen him pulled away to ODI duties with the England Lions but his one longer form match of July warrants a nomination. Against Yorkshire he got 79* in the first innings and total match figures of 6/122.

Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire)

Only played at the start of the month but what a start it was for the ex-England man. In two games he got 191 runs including 123 v Surrey. He also chipped in with a very rare wicket against Hampshire.

Adam Wheater (Hampshire)

Often overlooked at Hampshire but has had a solid month for the underachieving Division One side. Across his five innings this month he has scored 317 runs at an average of 63.4. The highlight of his month was 204* against Warwickshire.
"It has been said of the unseen army of the dead, on their everlasting march, that when they are passing a rural cricket ground the Englishman falls out of the ranks for a moment to look over the gate and smile."
