Does Cook go? Yes or no?

Postby andy » Tue Dec 20, 2016 2:18 pm

Do you think Cook will go? Do you think he should go? Personally i don't think he is at fault for series loss, we didn't score enough runs, or look penetrative with the ball....He looked completely shell-shocked in interview...maybe it is time for him to go.... No gurantee Root will be a great captain though...

Does he or do you mean should he? For my money he should have gone after the 13-14 ashes debacle, along with Flower. Not the sort of captain who feels he should go down with his ship but maybe this winter's humiliation's might be one humiliation too many even for him. Musn't forget his failure in Bangladesh before India.

England don't play another Test series for a long time now. Cook has plenty of time out of the limelight to get his thoughts together.

I don't see what Cook could have really done more in India to be honest, we knew we weren't going to win. We didn't get hammered and I certainly wouldn't call it a humiliation.

We lost to Bangladesh and by any reasonable measure we were well and truly hammered in India. Cook's personal scores have neen flattered by so many dropped catches it should be an personal embarrassment to him and his captaincy, never very good at the best of times, has been dreadful.

i dont think there is much from a captaincy perspective that cook could have done to avoid us losing the series but some of his decision making on how he handled his bowlers in the last 2 tests was as bad as i have ever seen from him

and its not something that has been a strength at the best of times

Why would they be better as a team with a new Captain? That's a very odd statement to make.

Would a new Captain solve the lack of top order batsman successfully making the transition to Test cricket?

Would it solve the lack of spinners in the English game?

In fact what would it solve?

Cook has been accused of being negative on occasion, but actually there aren't many skippers who'd do things differently.

Well, given everyone expected us to be hammered in India then it hardly seems just to throw that on Cook.

Given he's the highest scoring opener in the history of the game, comments on his batting seem a little churlish to be honest.

It's odd that I am actually on the side of Cook for once, "Nurse, the medications wearing off!"

Sometimes you need passion, desire and fight in the field/team cook doesn't provide that anymore.
losing 8 test in a yr is not on.
or losing 12 or 13 whatever the number is since 2015 is not on.
England would be a better team with cook not in charge.

TBH it says something that england looked so much better in the field when cook wasn't even in the field.
when root was captaining for a few overs england looked so much better in the field.

Again, I have to question based on what?

Passion, desire, fight? That's pure bunkum to be honest, as is the nonsense about them looking better, based on what.

Wait, I remember how this goes, I've got it in my signature just in case I forgot. Never mind, never mind, get rid of him, hangin' too good for him!

Replacing Cook won't solve any of the issues that England currently have.

having seen india look so much better with kohli in charge, i think passion, desire and fight makes a difference.
when the day cook doesn't captain england you will see how england will be a much better side with Cook not captaining england.

for one when cook wasn't in the field Root made a bowling change and took 2 wickets and suddenly it felt like england were trying to get wickets.
think Ali/ rashid were bowling all day before that and it was obvious both were tired and england needed a change.

Although a fan of Cook's batting his captaincy was negative. He should have declared and increased probability of England win in one test. So he should go in my opinion for not grabbing the opportunity available or not understanding how much total is enough in India even after playing two lengthy test series here. Moreover he had 3 spinners for day 5. This is what i find fault in , however maybe he was influence by coach in late declaration. Other captain too may be cautious fearing the odd chance of defeat and not grab opportunity, so much won't change.

If he gives up captaincy, i dont think he will retire as he is a specialist batsman and 32 years for specialist bat is still 5 years left. Also he is not playing in ODI and T20. There is enough test cricket left in him and break lot of records including few set by Sachin. So i doubt he will retire even if he is sacked as captain. Team England cannot afford such a player to retire when the retirements / sacking of KP, Trott, Bell, Strauss, Swann and Monty have not allowed the team to recover at all. Add Cooks sacking as batsman and England will further cause more trouble to themselves. There has been enough attrition due to one reason or other and Cook has to be continued as a player. As a batsman he has to stay. As a captain he can be sacked as he did not make much use of match winning situations.

Hameed is a good player and was impressive but by no ways i am confident he will be as good as Cook after seeing him in few tests. And there is always a chance of Hameed or some other opener getting injured. Who will be the replacement and will they be as prolific as Cook. Let Hameed etc settle when Cook and Joe continue to be in team.

True splinters there are things to be done that Cook has little influence over and the current chairman of selectors who should have been discarded after the appalling selections for the 2013-14 ashes should go as well.

Cooks batting for most of the last two years has depended on dropped catches in almost every series so this recent spate is not new. Most sports people reach a natural time to move on Cook's time was a while ago and only his natural arrogance and support from his clique of pals has kept him going.
