Ashes selection: Batters.

Postby Arthur Crabtree » Mon Jul 17, 2017 6:14 pm

So far we have the following party.

Bairstow
Buttler
Moeen
Rashid
Rayner
Ball
Broad
Anderson
Woakes
Wood

So we can add seven batters to the squad now.

Collecting these names made me think how wide open this is. There are few convincing picks and so many dubious long shots. Sibley, Alsop Burns, Godleman, Browne, Brown, Clark, Clarke... There are a lot of opener possibles, but few middle order.

The forgotten men, Vince, Hales and Duckett.

Ian Bell?

Compo?

KP....?

It is quite impossible to make any meaningful choice at the moment. Only the obvious three can be selected with any confidence...right now you could pick the other four by throwing darts at the list !

I hope the next few matches allow one or two players to make a serious claim...

The poll does demonstrate how ineffectually anyone other than the three are making their case.

IMO Hameed still has time, and im desperate to see him score runs soon, because he has the technique to suceed, need him to stay fit and knuckle down ASAP!

Very interesting that Hales never had a look in in this poll and now I think he is very likely to be in the squad.

Yes he was a long way down the queue of opening bats, but might sneak in the middle order. I still see him as an outsider though.

My knee's been jerking overnight and I've left out Westley and Jennings for Stoneman and Livingstone.

I've added Malan. Reckon twenty in this innings added to the two sixties show at least he has enough grit to compensate for perhaps some shortfall in class.
And it's hard to see three other bats going past him before they have to select/punt on a team...

Going to wind this up as the squad is announced this week. We haven't picked the collection that will go, but it's probably just as good.

Cook
Haseeb
Robson
Westley
Root
Malan
Stokes
Bairstow
Foakes
Moeen
Rashid
Rayner/T.Curran
Woakes
Wood
Broad
Anderson
Footitt

TRJ was picked but is injured. Still a query over the third spinner or sixth seamer or even if either is necessary and just sixteen can be named.

Stoneman will obviously go, but I don't think we've omitted any other definites. Hales, Ball and Finn have their advocates and Leach has had another ok season. And I've still got a hunch for Plunkett, especially now TRJ is out. The only player we've picked who obviously won't go is Footitt. Probably Rashid too.

Must be a bad fracture if it's ruling him out (and is it certain TRJ is out? Brisbane is two months away). If because of his season's form, fair enough.

If TRJ is fit, put him in for Footitt, who then replaces Curran. If Haseeb is out, in comes Northeast.
