England all time ODI XI- batters from 3-5.

Postby Arthur Crabtree » Sun Feb 18, 2018 9:57 am

Choose three batters from the options above.

So far the side is:

Gooch
Trescothick
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
10
11

Though the openers vote remains open.

Here are runs scored by England bats coming in at 3-6, against other top eight sides, minimum 600 runs.

There will be an all rounder category which will include some of these players, but only one spot up for grabs.

I've gone for Root and KP who I think are self evident. Obviously should have gone for IJLT otherwise, but have gone for Colly as a sixth bowler and leading fielder as well as a handy limited overs bat. Fairbrother and Thorpe were tempting too.

There will next be a vote for three pace bowlers, then two spinners and a keeper. Then a choice of all rounders from those not selected so far. That gives us twelve. Then finally a vote to leave a player out from the twelve so we can balance the side.

Are we not allowed to consider Morgan for the top five?

Very authoritarian.

I saw Morgan, but didn't consider him for some reason?

The one I might have put in but didn't was Andrew Strauss who did ok at four for a while (and scored a big ton in a WC v India). But figured no one was going to vote for Strauss in an all time England ODI XI...

Looks like the third batter is going to be a split vote.

Surely not Trott? Do we need a grinder in our team?

Trott was a bit of a hero in the ODI side of his era. Depends how you pick these sides, whether looking at who had the best of the skills needed at the time, or who had the qualities we value now.

I'd actually bat Buttler at 5 and have Hick at six. Hick didn't need time to get his eye in, whereas Buttler does. Once in, both can be destructive.
