Not good signs if the captain is saying that...but if that is the case, why is he playing now? Clearly not good enough..

England's selection going into the WI with the Ashes looming. Those vulnerable in italics. Underneath, are likely players in waiting.

Cook
Jennings
Westley
Root
Malan
Stokes
Bairstow
Moeen
R-Jones
Broad
Anderson

Haseeb, Ballance, Buttler, Woakes, Ball, Finn, Wood, Dawson.

Those in the CC doing well or ostentatiously touted.

Stoneman, Gubbins, Robson, Burns, Davies, Lawrence, Livingstone, Foakes, Coad, C. Overton, T. Curran Crane, Leach, Rayner, Rashid, others.

Feels like a good home win v SA hasn't done much to tighten selection issues.

Personally I'd go with Hameed.

Westley and Malan need more chance to nail down their place.

I'd also bring Woakes back and rotate Jimmy, Broad and TRJ over the three games.

I'd bring Woakes back certainly. Though I'd give Jennings another game or two.

There is more than a hint of Lyth about Jennings, unfortunately. I am all for giving time to players, but not for the sake of it. Jennings just doesnt cut it as a test batsman, he had his technique thoroughly worked over, admittedly by world class bowling in some times helpful conditions, but you still expect over a 4 match series in tough conditions for a player to get a score at least once.

Jennings contributed 48 as his best, and that was after a couple of dropped chances and some streaky shots. After his fortune to beat the new ball, he then got out to a straight short ball that he should have really dealt with.

Westley looks like a much better player. While he didnt smash it, he did at least look like he has a workable technique. In fact, if Westley can cut out those flashes outside off when bowlers start to cramp him, he could do well

Well that really narrows it down :)

Seriously the only quibble I have with your "players in waiting" is that I doubt Buttler still belongs ...reckon Foakes is the likely spare now.
Plenty of room for new batsmen...not much for extra bowlers though barring injuries...

West Indies series might clarify things . Suppose it will have to...

Got to consider the options...

J Root (Yorkshire, captain), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), J Anderson (Lancashire), J Bairstow (Yorkshire, wk), S Broad (Nottinghamshire), A Cook (Essex), M Crane (Hampshire), D Malan (Middlesex), T Roland-Jones (Middlesex), B Stokes (Durham), M Stoneman (Surrey), T Westley (Essex), C Woakes (Warwickshire).

Interesting changes. Woakes is back as an extra, Crane and Stoneman are in for poor Liam Dawson and Jennings.

Don't know what that means, apart from Stoneman will come in for KJ. I guess it's Woakes or TRJ and Crane or Malan.

Dawson is this year's Darren Pattinson. Should never have been picked which somehow justifies treating him a bit shoddily.

It feels like England are drawing names for opening bats out of a raffle.

No problems with the Stoneman selection...solid record in the CC recently ; experienced enough to know his own game : may or may not be up to Tests but this will at least afford us a chance to assess him. Sure West Indies aren't SA - or Australia - in terms of bowling attacks but they aren't total rubbish at least in new ball bowlers so we should get an idea of his prospects. They could hardly have persisted with Jennings who seems to be dropped on 0 every second innings and still can't get past fifty...if he is to come back I frankly doubt it will be as an opener.

Crane is presumably there to settle in with the squad and possibly play in a later Test - hard to see an extra spinner being required for a pink ball match.

I do hope they don't decide to avoid choosing between bowlers and play all six of them : five pace bowlers is surely too many and I think they need to continue with Malan so as to either establish his viability as a middle order option or close the file on him.

Not a fan of rotating fast bowlers but it could be one option. I'd be tempted to keep the same XI apart from Stoneman for Jennings and allow Woakes a little longer to be sure he's 100% for a Test.

Not sure how much I'll see of this one ...not Aus-friendly playing times !

I am always skeptical when a players overall average over a long career is simply not to standard of International mention, and Stoneman has only had one (curtailed, not full) season prior to this in an 11 year career where he has averaged over 50. He followed it up with a 14 game season where he averaged 24. And I'd say "consistent" form for a 30 year old should be about 4 years, where you expect international standard play.... he has 2 low 30s seasons in that snap shot.

It makes me think, why suddenly the improvement? Is it his game, is it short term snap shots based on good conditions? What worries me is, Stoneman is one of 4 of Surrey's top 6 who averages over 55. His opening partner (Burns) is 4 years younger and performing as well. The guy below averages 109 for the year. Roy averages the same. Only Borthwick and Foakes (who is keeping) are the specialist bats at Surrey who arent off the charts performing.

Is this indicative of a rather average cricketer performing in conditions where others are breaking century records, or where 60% of his other colleagues are matching or exceeding his performance level?

It has failure written all over it.

Mason Crane making the squad seems incredibly presumptuous also. A player should be playing county cricket and prove at least they can live and succeed there, until they are distracted by the international team. He clearly isnt ready for internationals, and he is hardly going to be ready for Australia either. Even if he was, would I be taking a 20 year old spinner out to Australia for his first tour? Its a bit of a dead man zone for all spinners, so England seem to want to wreck the lads career if they are elevating him now.

I don't really have a problem with Stoneman being picked, he's in form and has had a solid season. I've said in the past that he doesn't have the long term record one would expect of a player his age but he has spent most of his career opening up at ClS I guess.
