vince hasnt played a game for england yet so im not sure how you arent convinced by him at international level

id prefer him to roy, as vince looks a proper batsmen whereas a bit like luke wright im not sure roy could do it against top international bowlers

I'm expecting this team at the WC

Cook
Bell
Ballance
Root
Morgan
Buttler
Bopara
Broad
Jordan
Tredwell
Anderson

Apparently this side has been ripped up, but I'd be surprised if it isn't substantially intact. Maybe Hales, Stokes/Woakes, Finn, Gurney in reserve. I'm not ruling Bresnan out either.
I always say that everybody's right.

Watching him fail, time and again at Lions level.

Need a fast bowler for the Australian wickets

Having said that if Finn returns to form he's a shoo in.

im not sure finn reallly had a drop of form in ODIs and T20s he was dropped from every format because of his test bowling, i may well be wrong though just dont remember a string of abject performances in limited overs cricket. His ER whilst being high in tests is actually very low in ODIs and of course he takes wickets as well

I would have Hales and Bell open. I was thinking Vince at 3, but the lack of a score for the Lions is making me doubt.

01 Hales 02 Bell 03 Ballance 04 Root 05 Morgan 06 Buttler 07 Bopara 08 Jordan 09 Broad 10 Treadwell 11 Anderson

But it still doesn't feel good enough. Ideally Finn would come back in, but he isn't ready yet. It would also lengthen the tail. A year ago I would have dropped Anderson, given that the World Cup was to be played in Australia, but you would need Finn to be fully reliable for that to happen. Gurney looks decent but with all fit I can't fit him in to the final XI.

Ballance doesn't excite in the way that Vince or Roy does. But who can argue with his List A average? Root provides a valuable bowling option and is a better one day player then often given credit for. In terms of all rounders, Bopara is earning his place even if some doubts will never go away. Stokes is another option but his beast place is probably at 5 and Morgan won't move. Rashid is a 7 no higher so would need Bopara to move up the order, and there have been suggestions about him moving to 3 but his record at the top of the order really is dire.

Don't see why. Plunkett's a better bowler now than when he played the last of his 29 ODIs in 2011 and certainly much better than when, as a 21 year old, Pakistan and Sri Lanka took heavy toll of his bowling (Sri Lanka carted all our bowlers when they won that series 5-0).

Hales has to play, but will Cook's ego allow him to see what is best for the side?

I worry that England will avoid this decision by "resting" Cook in the hope that Bell has a poor series.

Agree. Plunkett in Australia might be a decent shout. Can bat usefully down the order too.

As for the top order ; does Ballance have to play ? Surely Cook Hales Bell Root Morgan Buttler Bopara + four bowlers would be viable ?

Personally I'd as soon Cook kept his powder dry for Tests , as long as the ODI batting has a fair mix of experience and youth : but I get the feeling England want the same leadership for both - at least for now.

Not that bothered . They'll be pushing to win the cup anyway ; but stranger things have happened . See who's in form end of summer.

You would drop Ballance after this summer for Cook, in the OD team?

Well no ...as I indicated , I'd prefer Cook to stick to Tests. But I don't think that will happen (could be wrong) so I am looking at how you get Hales into the side without upsetting the balance (one L) of the team. :)

Could leave Bell out , I suppose. But I wouldn't. Test and ODI are two different things , and frankly I fancy Ballance is probably , like the others , a better bet for the longer game.

Ballance has a great record in OD cricket though, and he has adapted to the international team very well this summer. He has both firepower and run scoring ability, it would be stupid not to give him an extended run.

You wont found a louder Hales supporter than me, but dropping Ballance for Hales is not an answer imo.

Bell is a better ODI player than Cook imo, so Cook is the one to go.

I do know what you mean though. They wont drop Bell or Cook from the ODI team, and I cant see them dropping Ballance either.....

Ie.... Hales wont get picked again :facepalm

Players will get rested. So Hales will get a chance that way.
