To be fair bell averaged 30 80% of his career.
Cricinfo recently destroyed him, he only performed in 20 test matches, the rest he been terrible for his ability.
Really hate player like him and rohit sharma, so overrated and get so many chances.

I don't agree with taking out a players good periods to make judgements on his career as a whole tbh

i'm more concerned with his current status in the team on the back of what he has achieved over the last 18-20 months which is surely what his continued selection should be based on

he's made 400 total runs in 17 innings this year and 143 of them came in one innings

Not sure ian bell will be dropped now, possibly after South Africa.
50/50 in him playing or not.
Only want him to play since England don't really have anyone else to bring in and I don't trust the English selectors they haven't really done a good job recently been picking players too much on numbers and not talent or attributes likely to work in international, selectors does well with the bowlers though terrible with the batsman especially openers.
Plus if bell goes England will having 2 slots in a merry go around opener and 6, which could easily spread to number 3 just like in India case now.
But as rich said before bell doesn't deserve to be in the team really.

No A games this summer. From memory, the last A series in SA, featured Robson, Lyth and Trott, who aren't going to offer a change, and Taylor, and I think Vince, who doesn't seem to be going forward in first class games. So the search has been shelved.

the potential worry about going back to ballance is even during his very good initial period in the test team he looked far stronger against pace than spin , so how he will do against spin whilst out of form doesn't inspire confidence either

Ballance didn't look too bad against spin, admittedly he doesn't play many attacking shot or can be bog down but he can pick spinner and turn which make him good in test cricket but bad in limited overs against spin bit like cook really.

Would take him ahead of butler, Morgan or bell against spin all three showed far too many time their struggle to pick spin and turn and scarily assume all spinner bowl straight or the stock ball spins the same amount most times.
The way butler plays spin must be a worry he finding all kinds of ways of getting out to spin.
I do hope England don't pick any spin specialist bats for the tour, none of the players England think are good players of spin are actually good players of spin when it turns.
Remember in the last t20 World Cup when Nasser and ganguly were at the post match show and Nasser was saying how Ali was a good player of spin, ganguly must not have even heard Nasser speak but he went on and said how Ali wasn't a good player of spin and started to disect Ali against spin.
Ganguly main point was Ali wasn't picking the spinner and in doing so when he does come out of his crease or play some attacking shots he plays it with lots of risk, looks good in England doesn't work when it spins though.
Bell, Ali, Morgan and probably butter all really do the same thing.

Jayawardene will be a huge help though might make the English batsman and coaches finally understand that it is all about picking spin/ lengths and then playing shots.
Thorpe and root are really good at it which is why their are really good players of spin.

Although I haven't seen balance tested in a spinning pitch either at home or abroad so can't be sure on him yet.
Signs are not good for butler though struggled against spin in England during odis and test.
Batted like a tail ender most of the time against spin.

oh and btw buttler scored runs by the bucketload on his last lions tour to sri lanka and they had guys that had played test cricket in their A team

Didn't see his A team games live so can't comment but what I have seen of him international cricket against spin doesn't look good.
Was terrible in 2013 champions trophy and has been dismissed 5 times by Lyon with not too many deliveries.
The way he is getting out doesn't look good.

Either way we will find out soon with butter most likely gonna visit UAE, ban, India in the next 18 months.

I don't think my memory is going so must have been an earlier tour than that

or are those stats only for the FC games , he might have only played the limited overs part of the tour ?

Could be the Sri Lanka odi series before wc.
He did pretty well if my memory serves me right although it was an odi and he wasn't tested like he would be in a test match.
