Only 33. He seems to have been around forever. But maybe they'll go for a younger full time captain.

Is Bartlett ahead of O'Neill in the pecking order?

Ngidi and burger have the ball on a string! Stubbs has dropped green twice taking him to 6 drops in the series!

Erm yeah I would say Bartlett is ahead of O'Neill at the moment but Australia seem reluctant to blood any new quick in red ball these days so hard to truly tell

Haven't seen much of O'Neill but from what I hear he's only medium pace? Bartlett is around 138-140 kph when he gets going

Medium-fast, but moves the ball in the air both ways and nips it off the deck. Was player of the year in the Shield, and caused plenty of issues in CC.

Can't be far behind in the pecking order then....

Marnus failed again tonight...I love watching him and he's a class act but this drop in form across all formats has been going on for a while now....wonder if it's time he focused on shield cricket for the foreseeable...it's getting painful for him now

All of his problems started when he messed around with his guard. In the series vs India at the start of 2023, he had a string of dismissals missing balls on his stumps ( I think by memory he was out lbw or bowled every innings in the series), and he tried to combat that by moving to an offstump guard. The result has been that he no longer knows where his offstump is, and is getting out playing balls all the time he shouldn't.

Aussie selectors still seem to be obsessed with jhye Richardson who can't stay fit so I'm guessing he is still near the front of the pecking order :facepalm

Bartlett and O'Neill next best of the rest....lance Morris has been ruled out for the whole summer again hopefully he's a bit like pat Cummins and as he gets older his body sorts itself out.....

Marnus has also fallen into the trap of going out and being negative. He seemingly goes out and wants to focus on not making errors, not taking risks, batting time to give him a chance - but he then isn't punishing the bad balls or really putting pressure on bowlers. And the result of that is bowlers can be really aggressive to him. Even to bad balls recently he has been tentative, rather than driving or cutting, he just wants to dead bat stuff to take out all risks....

The problem with that is, if a bowler serves up a juicy buffet ball and the best you can do is drop a defensive shot into the offside gap for a max single, you encourage the bowler to keep pitching the ball up to find movement without the risk. And I think that's why he is failing - he's allowing bowlers to really keep on maximum attack settings, and eventually he makes the error having not gone anywhere. Smashing a couple of wayward balls to the boundary in one over, the bowler is retreating back to more defensive lines. It makes your job so much easier.

I have a feeling at this point he might be better to go out a few innings on Bazball style for a few overs. Get a quick start, then build on it. Bowlers can sense his wicket like sharks sense blood in water. He needs to find a way to counter attack it

I wonder if josh inglis is a viable option to bat 3 in tests for the time being? Clearly has a good technique the selectors rate him but want Carey to have the gloves ...why not try him there? Always seems to score runs give him a go. .can't do any worse than marnus right now
