The problem Monty has is that he is not the best player in his discipline available for England so of course his other attributes will be brought up. As Grey put it earlier he is not a world beater so it is tough to get away with not being a respectable batsman or fielder whereas McGrath who is one of the greatest pace bowlers of the modern era was an instant pick.

A more realistic comparision would be Jimmy who is an automatic pick these days regardless of the fact he is not the best batsman among the bowlers we have on offer.

It has to be said though, that McGrath was a far, far, far better pace bowler than Panesar is a spinner. For exceptional bowlers, allowances can be made.

IMO Samit is the one who they will use for the ODI's as second spinner. Better spinners than Samit are unlikely to make it to playing 11 because of his batting abilities.

From what I saw at the under 19 WC Jamie Overtorn showed more potential than Topley. The captain of that team Ball didn't seem to have a clue which doesn't help. Anyway you never know what will happen to the under 19 guys as many of them just disappear.

I reckon that at least 7 of that U19 squad will have successful careers. Players like Topley, Ball are already doing well in county cricket. If the Overton's, Bell-Drummond, Kapil and Foakes get more opportunities then i think they'll also do well.

There is also this Ali. He bowled lovely late swing in one of the matches at 80mph. Just needs to bowl a yard quicker.

And then there are the crowds. Since the season of 2004 attendances in this country for ODIs have been quite astonishing. Despite the fact that both Bangladesh and New Zealand- hardly crowd-pullers- have both toured twice in that period, the grounds have been at over 92% capacity throughout, peaking last year at 97%, with 95% this summer. Don’t ever say it is a dying format in this country.

Vaughan's bowling attack is one spinner too many and one fast bowler too short. especially with Anderson and Broad being injury prone. Need a Rankin or Plunkett type figure in that 15 to accompany Finn.

Anderson isn't injury prone. His last injury was a side strain May 2011, missed 1 Test. Plunkett was injured in the summer and Rankin only played in 7 cc games last season.
