Ansari really deserves his call up :facepalm

I've seen worse players called up before. I guess they've got to look for the future and in 4 years time he'll probably be in contention. This is the easiest match we'll have for a while so it makes sense to try them out here.

If 2 x 50 in 30 matches and an economy rate not far from a run a ball gets you an international call up, then I guess at least they are trying to encourage other people?

Rashid should start against Ireland, 2nd leading wicket taker in last years RLODC after Jeetan Patel. 9 matches, 21 wickets, 19.47 average, 4.71 economy rate, 24.8 strike rate.

Decent record with the bat too - 142 runs off 7 innings, 35.5 average and a strike rate of 92.2.

Arthur Crabtree wrote:Is there any need to go back to Bresnan?

Yes - Brezzy lad was also amongst the wickets in last years RLODC - 9 matches, 15 wickets, 24.73 average, 4.92 economy rate, 30.1 strike rate.

Going back to a 30 year old who was never good enough and never got fit doesn't make much sense.

Bresnan's time has flown in ODI cricket. Tests, another matter as he actually showed some skill in that forum, he never looked a sound ODI pick

More Medium Fast buffet crap to serve up to aggressive opposition.

We've seen what Bresnan can do in ODIs, and what looked so limiting in the WC. It feels like a backward step to pick him again. Fair enough with Rashid (who may play in Barbados) but, it's possible an early season ODI in Ireland might not be his best chance?

Don't see the harm in selecting Bresnan for the Ireland ODI, the bowling attack could do with an experienced head.

It's possible Anderson and Broad could be rested for the New Zealand ODIs and Woakes is currently recovering from surgery. A fully recovered Bresnan is a useful addition to the England team.

Though they've got Finn who is experienced (who is pretty lucky to be there and hasn't started the season well). Shahzad would have been an exciting pick, though maybe a bit too soon for him, based on brief recent form. Rankin perhaps, for another experienced played.

But I'm just being negative. It'll be good to see Hales opening, and Willey get a game. And Roy and Vince.

Wonder if Taylor will bat at six...

The Guardian said Plunkett, but that feels unlikely.

Your boy, I guess. If he doesn't then he will be the first player dropped from the WC (presuming he doesn't play in Barbados).

Wood or Jordan and Rashid feel possible.

Given the XI they've picked, it could be:

01 Hales 02 Roy 03 Taylor 04 Vince 05 Bairstow 06 Billings 07 Willey 08 Ansari 09 Gregory 10 Bresnan 11 Finn

Which is a long tail! 10 of them have a century in either FC/LA cricket. Though I would anticipate that Rashid and Wood would replace Ansari and Gregory.

Report from the Telegraph tonight (by Hoult, who has been on the money recently) says that England want to name Root as captain once the summer ODIs start, though they'll let the new Director of Cricket make the final decision. Also a possibility that Buttler will be named captain of the T20I side.

Still think the team at the end of the summer will not contain many of these new kids on the block, and will be something along the lines of:

Hales
Ali
Taylor
Root
Morgan
Buttler
Stokes
Rashid
Willey
Woakes
Finn

But even if only a couple make it each year, it should mean some kind of progress towards a home World Cup in 2019.

Has to be more changes than that. Morgan and Finn should be nowhere near the ODI team.
