The enigma that is Kevin Pietersen

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

Third? My word, that's some achievement, or was being "instrumental" meant as a criticism?

As said before, Pietersen and the IPL could have been made for each other - plenty of packaging but little content.

Kevin Pietersen can earn 3m pounds in IPL: Lalit Modi

============================================================

I won't be surprised if he earns that much or more.IPL franchisees have shown that they are willing to pour money on star players.

==================================================================

Apart from IPL, Surrey too are keen to offer him a new contract.
Surrey are confident that discarded England batsman Kevin Pietersen will sign a new contract at The Oval.

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/cricket/26060841

The county will open negotiations with the 33-year-old once a severance package with the England and Wales Cricket Board is agreed.

Surrey believe Pietersen is happy at The Oval and that they can offer a competitive deal while still remaining within the £2m salary cap for counties.

Not sure how Surrey plan on staying below the salary cap if they re-sign KP, may have to axe some players. KP might jet off for the CPL mid season if they don't pay him enough.

Salary cap... don't make me laugh. KP will officially be playing for next to nothing, as a generous wealthy Surrey fan buys KP a luxury villa in the Swiss Alps, along with a large sum of money finding it's way into a Swiss bank account.

Yes, these are ways which have been used before.Maybe they might use such tactics in cricket as well for the purpose of getting rid of salary cap.

Well Surrey are keen to sign him but they have stated it's down to finances, they had KP for nothing as the ECB paid his wages.

Okay, so they need some finance .There are options to get finance if county cricket is popular and well followed.Alos, it will help if the county matches are televised (Advertisement revenues).

Affording Kevin Pietersen isn't the issue for Surrey, they are probably the richest county in addition to having some wealthy benefactors.

As mentioned in the topic, counties are restricted to a salary cap of £2 Million per year. Considering Surrey have Graeme Smith on the books as well as some county stalwarts (Davies, Meaker) they would do well not to breach the cap.

The television rights are basically in one package (England, England womens, England u19s, Counties, Club T20 Finals Day) Really the domestic game should have it's own seperate TV rights, especially how popular Twenty20 is.

That's almost certainly true, AP. The main issue may be whether they want him in the dressing room.

As the salary/finance is not an issue for Surrey, who knows they might provide the money over salary cap via other means.

Yes, the County should have its broadcast rights.Any cricket tournament of major cricketing nation nowadays is watched worldwide.I have seen Pro40 and FLT20 in my country,but not all matches are broadcasted.Probably only few LVCC matches are broadcasted afaik.Once they fetch broadcast rights for all matches, the source of income increases further by boundary line advertisement boards, the scorecards with name of some company,more money fetched by cricketers wearing sponsors clothes and few more logos on clothes will mean more revenue etc etc.

Kevin Pietersen axed over Alastair Cook concerns: ECB

Kevin Pietersen's England career was brought to an end due to concerns about his support for captain Alastair Cook, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) revealed on Sunday.

==================================================================================================================
After Strauss, the news is that Cook too had issues with KP.

Have ECB explained why the two captains felt they did not have his support :?:

Hence a Surrey benefactor (Rory Hamilton-Brown's Dad) offering to pay KPs wages.

Sky Sports (the TV rights holders) only broadcast two County Championship matches per year, I imagine whatever live domestic cricket is shown in England is also shown worldwide.

County Cricket on a whole is badly marketed, which is a shame considering there is so much untapped potential to make it as a 2nd national sport and especially in a digital era.
