Bumrah's slower balls did a lot of damage. 4 Tests 19 wickets at 16.89.
Under Stokes, taking wickets needs pace to bounce out the opposition. Hmmm...
In past few years, bowlers like Umesh Yadav have done well as he gets good reverse swing. In fact he was bowling well in India than he was doing on overseas tour. Although there have been rare exceptions like Steyn on one tour of India and Jasprit recently in couple of tests, just pace isn't going to help. Other skills like yorker, bouncer at good pace, slower one need to be well executed/
Mark Wood tried his best, not only in IPL but in tests on tour of India. He bent his back so much that he got the bounce and pace even from the wickets which favored spinners. But then by the end of a series usually a specialist spinner is likely to have better combo of bowling average and bowling strike rate. Also the probability of a spinner picking a 8 fer is lot more than a pacer picking an 8 fer.
Mark Wood gives no less effort than Jasprit Bumrah. It is wonderful to see that how hard Mark tries and how much effort he puts even in these conditions. However, imo Jas is better skilled and executes his skills properly more often than not as compared to Mark. It also helps that Jas has more international level experience even though he is younger than Mark Wood.
