still a few places up for grabs

amazing that we went into the ashes with a fairly settled top 7, now we only have 2 batsmen (bell and cook) who are guaranteed to be playing in the first test of the summer

I'm not sure about Taylor to be honest. He's been consistantly left on the side lines and I remain convinced that the higher ups do not rate something about him. It might be media hype about Robson, but you do get the feeling that he's in with a very good shout at present.

I reckon all these have something of a chance of playing in the next year for the Test team.

Cook, Carberry, Root, Robson

Trott, Bell, Taylor, Ballance, Moeen

Stokes, Woakes

Kerrrigan, Panesar, Borthwick, Tredwell

Bairstow, Davies, Buttler, Prior

Onions, Finn, Bresnan, Broad, Anderson, Jordan

Then long shots, Compton, Rashid, Rankin, Bopara, Kieswetter, Rayner, Chopra

Any others? Feels like a lot of candidates.

Though the middle order is a place we lack candidates. He needs to score Lions runs. But not inconceivable, especially with the numbers breaking their fingers.

Thats true. A spinner who can't bowl spin but can score runs seems to be a popular choice in the media at the moment though.

I would have thought the likes of Ballance would be given a run this summer. Then again a lot of this is going to come down to how much say the different players in the England selection game had in the last Ashes tour.

Was someone like Ballance specifically a Flower pick, or was there larger concensus, etc.

He seemed to come out of Giles' group of players. But it looks likely that Flower was still involved in picking Giles sides.

Westfield!

He scored a century and took three wickets on a return to club cricket. If that ain't knee jerk then I don't know what is. I am sure the ECB could find a loophole for him to return to pro cricket too...

I think he did quite well in the red ball stuff last year from memory. I had wondered when the Northants line up was named and he was listed at six if this was what he saw himself as being and had pushed for it considering that is where
England will need to fill. Seems he came in at 7 though.

Dunno? Woakes and Stokes are in the way. Can do ok in limited overs and take it from there though.
