To be honest Hope if you consider the ECBs position they have no option but to demand a firm commitment.

As long as KP is making demands in the press they are essentially faced with a crossroads whereby they can either be responcible for losing one of England's greatest limited overs talents or they can set a very dangerous public precedent ratifying player power rendering central contracts waffer thin and setting up unknown consequences down the line.

They have no option but to secure an unconditional surrender from KP even if it is only a public facade.

I agree 100%. If the selectors have to name the 30 players for the T20 on Wednesday, the dressing room could be an embarrassing place when the players come together for the test.

Yes, that's true, Kim. I was refuting the earlier suggestion that the ECB had suddenly come up with the rule about no T20 without ODI half way through the contract period.

No but they did it when they knew what KP was thinking about. First indication of his retirement from ODIs came 18 months a go and AFAIK his contract would have allowed it then.

why else would they change the wording of the contracts unless they were worried about someone quitting ODIs but wanting to play t20s ?

The suggestion here is that they changed the contracts specifically to trap Pietersen. The more likely explanation is that the ECB decided to prioritise one day cricket and wanted ALL their elite players to commit themselves to the cause.

as m@tt showed in his breakdown earlier in the thread the only two players who were ever realistically going to be in the position of quitting ODIs but wanting to continue in T20s were KP and swann.

i dont think anyone was implying they did it to "trap" KP but fairly sure the change was made as a result of either the comments being made by swann about ODIs or by the signs KP was giving behind the scenes, with the intention of trying to ensure both remained available for ODIs.

i meant more the ECB would pay attention to what he was saying directly to them rather than what was said in the daily mail ;)

That article is dated 15th July long after he announced his retirement.

If KP was thinking about retiring so early, he should not have signed the contract but he did.
